Obituary of Larry Shick

Larry William Shick (October 1, 1931 - May 5, 2016) It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of a much loved husband, father and grandfather. Larry passed away on Thursday in his 84th year after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 61 years, Daphne (Caron); their cherished children, Melodie (John Porter), Greg (John Malloy), Tannis (Darcy McCombs), Linda (Joe DiMassimo), and two wonderful granddaughters, Stephanie and Katie Porter. Larry died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and his two grand dogs. Larry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, son of William and Florence Shick, brother to Warner, Roger and Marilyn. After completing high school at age 19, he earned a scholarship to the Royal Roads Military College. He met many life-long friends while completing his flying training and he was awarded his wings. After Royal Roads, he went to Royal Military College for a further two years and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He went on to McGill University to obtain an additional degree of Bachelor of Engineering. He left the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1958 and joined IBM as a technical Systems Engineer in Toronto and then moved to Montreal to be the Technical Branch Manager. As a true entrepreneur, Larry started his own company called AGT before moving back to Toronto to become a Partner of Price Waterhouse until his retirement in 1992. Shortly after his first retirement, he joined Nesbitt Thompson as an Investment Advisor. Together with his daughter, Linda, they developed an investment advisory practice based on their professionalism in building trusting relationships with their clients. Daphne and Larry enjoyed traveling, some golf, bridge and sharing time together. Blessed with an optimistic outlook, Larry had a great sense of humour and with a twinkle in his eye, he loved to engage in conversation with everyone he met. He always put his family first and instilled in his children the principles he lived by: Truth, Duty, Valour, and Kindness. Larry was an active member of the Granite Club, Rosedale Golf Club and Royal Canadian Military Institute, but his favorite activity was spending time with his family. There will be a Memorial Service on Friday, May 13th at 2:00 p.m. in LAWRENCE PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH located at 2180 Bayview Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund or The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
