Obituary of Andrew Butler
BUTLER, Andrew Gordon
August 22, 1966 - April 6, 2016
Peacefully, while sleeping, Andrew, cherished elder son of Dr. David G. Butler and Marjorie Butler. Loving and loved brother of Ian L. Butler and his wife, Isabelle Bissonnette. Affectionate uncle to Sarah Alice, Charles Gordon and his namesake, one month old James Andrew Gregoire Butler. Andrew will also be missed by his uncles, John S. Butler, Dean H. Butler, Michael L. Schofield and their families.
In spite of the health challenges he faced, after graduation from Upper Canada College, Andrew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dalhousie University and, later, a Bachelor of Education degree from Brock University. For some years, Andrew was a primary school teacher with a keen interest in the education of children with special needs.
We will remember, with great affection, Andrew's kindness; his generosity, particularly to those whose need was greater than his, and to whom he would give his last dollar; his quick wit and sense of humour; and his ability to always find the correct words in any situation. Andrew's creativity found expression in the music he wrote and played on his many guitars, some of which he made; his wood and metal sculpture and painting; his many inventions, and in his poetry and prose. Andrew also had a more practical bent and was able to repair or build almost anything.
Andrew's fine mind enabled him to accomplish much, in spite of the challenge of mental illness that hampered his later life.
Andrew's ashes will be scattered in Granthams Landing, B.C., a place with special meaning to Andrew and his family.
Our grateful thanks are given to the Southlake Assertive Community Treatment Team, Joyce Whitty and Lindsay McTaggart in particular, for their kind care and support of Andrew over the past few years.
A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance for Andrew's life will be held in ST. PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 227 Bloor Street East, Toronto on Monday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m.
If you wish to make a gift of thanks for Andrew's life, donations to Healthy Minds Canada in his memory will be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
