Obituary of Thomas Medland
THOMAS STINSON MEDLAND
Died peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. Born on May 6, 1926 to Lillian (nee Stinson) and Thomas Medland, in Toronto. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Nancy Vernon Medland, children Wendy (Richard), Tom (Jan), Margot (Roland), Jan (Ken) and Jack (Sue), twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his sister Margie Magee. Also remembered by his step-children Tracy (Luc) and Greg, and their children, and Nancy's children, Jim, Grant, Chris, Kate and Nan. Tom enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 at the age of 17 and graduated from the University of Toronto in Engineering in 1949. He was a born entrepreneur who owned and operated a number of private ventures, including Medland Enterprises and Lisle Metrix. Tom was an active member of YPO, Craigleith Ski Club, the B & R, and a founder of the Royal Muskoka Island Tennis Club. In the summer he flew his Cessna or the little plane he built himself, to his beloved cottage on Lake Rosseau. It was the Cottage that, for 50 years, was the rock of his life and where he was happiest. It is there that we think of him most - water skiing, sailing, on the disk, presiding over dinner and games, playing tennis, dressing up for theme parties and telling stories. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Thursday, February 11th from 12:00 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre at www.sunnybrook.ca/foundation. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
