Dad provided his children with opportunities. Opportunities to enjoy a wide variety of sports, opportunities to acquire skills, opportunities to work and be paid, opportunities to appreciate art and music and the written and spoken word, opportunities to enjoy a city and country life, opportunities to love animals, opportunities to attend post secondary institutions, and the list goes on. He didn't tell us what to do or how to do it. In his wisdom, he provided facts, and let us decide what to do with that knowledge. He let us make our own mistakes and live with the repercussions. He was not familiar with the term: "Helicopter Parent." We will miss Dad's wise and gentle ways.

My dad had a way of teaching me life lessons in a way that I hope I have raised my kids, Dylan and Leigh. When I was 14 I recall smashing the boat at full throttle into an island in broad daylight with my sister Margot hanging on to the ski rope. We were lucky to survive without a scatch. I was sure I was in deep trouble for wrecking the boat. When my dad arrived that weekend instead of being angry he said - "I worry about you going on this cycling trip to the Maritimes if you can't focus on what you're doing. You could be killed by a car. I wont say you can't go, you need to decide if you can do it safely." Wow. I went on that trip and focus I did! In Dad's final few years, by example he taught me about courage and bravery in how he handled loosing so much in his day to day life that we all tend to take for granted. Missing you pops. XOX Jannie

I was sorry to hear about your Dad's passing, and our condolences to the whole family. My memory of your Dad is of a vigorous man in the prime of life, of helping him consruct a light box for a Christmas party, flying over Muskoka in his float plane, and playing "the game" in the living room on Sandringham Dr. I hope all theyears since then have treated you well, and that life has been a continuing adventure.

Dear Nancy, Wendy, Tom, Margot, Jan & Jack: Internet sites commonly require that we answer questions that are posed when we we need to reset a forgotten password. To the question "What is the name of your best friend?" I always answer: TOM. From the day we met in the early 70s to begin a long-lasting business relationship to our last telephone conversation several weeks ago we were fast friends. Whether it involved business in Milwaukee or tennis in Muskoka Tom was always a trusted supporter. I don't need to recount his qualities --- you know them well. Of all the titles appended to his name the one that describes him best is: Tom Medland, Solid Citizen. I regret that Elaine and I are unable to attend the Thursday celebration of Tom's life. Be assured that our thoughts and prayers are with the Medland family. Gerry

To the Medland Clan: I met Tom through Suzie and he became the Chairman of the Board of Directors for our family-run company, Canadian Spring. So much wisdom and humour, delivered to my (late) husband Wayne Gartshore and I, even the serious criticisms (reality) always delivered with a glint in his eye. He was highly respected by our venture capitalists and by us. We were so appreciative of him and the time he spent with us. My condolences to his extended family. Helen Gillespie

Have wonderful childhood memories of my Uncle Tom at Christmas time around the huge tree. I was so blessed to have you drop in my life just before I married my husband 25 years ago. It was truly one of my top ten memories of our wedding. I also appreciated your visits to Dad at the hospital when he was going through his struggles. Thank you for the wonderful memories!
