First, my thanks to Elizabeth Walker and Gloria Tuck to those of us you reached. Like many I first met Jerry when she was one of the nurses in National Girl Guide Camp in Ottawa. Several years later she was the nurse to a Canada/US Guide camp at the magnificent Lake O'Hara camp ground. On the train west she did rounds to make sure we were well, prepared for a lengthy climb from the railway stop. However, she also identified those who were considering a career in nursing and was very clear with her advice about the future of nurses in Canada. I wasn't in the least interested in nursing but since she was making sure I didn't talk (had laryngitis) I spent two days while she "did rounds" and chatted about nursing as a career. Like so many others who knew Jerry through Guides and nursing, I delighted in her annual letters and seeing her whenever I attended the U of Toronto alum gatherings on St. George and later on College Street. To those who recently cared for Jerry - so very many thanks. I believe that even as we celebrate having Jerry,as part of our lives she'll be engaging herself fully in whatever follows this life ---and have a wonderful time doing it. / Joy Calkin 6T0

So Jerry is my aunt.....when i was 4-ish, i found out that animals and Drs went together, and i decided that's what i wanted to do. My mom was dead set against it, but Jerry told her to leave me alone, and with her encouragement i went for it.
Even before entering OVC, i would sneak into the horse wards, and soon ended up holding and trotting out horses. I would watch life saving surgeries in the middle of the night, and, to keep me from being kicked out (you're not supposed to be there until you're in your last year) I would run and get surgical supplies that were needed....extra swabs, suture material, saline, etc. It wasn't long until i realized i was missing half the surgery, so i ended up with a little pile of what the surgeon needed on a sterile cloth at my feet. (The packages were wrapped, of course) and as soon as the surgeon wanted something, i could open the package and flip the contents onto the table.
Several years later i went back to the college, to find TWO tables near the instrument person. "What's that 2nd table?" i asked. Apparently one of the surgeons had gotten fed up waiting for extra suture etc. during the day while the tech was helping out in the other surgery room, and started yelling "I get this stuff IMMEDIATELY at 3 in the morning! Why can't you do this at 3 in the afternoon?!?!?" with LOTS of expletives mixed in. So the tech made him up a table with all the extras he needed. As soon as the other surgeons saw this, THEY all wanted a table, too....and so it came to be, thanks to Jerry! ps. Other students saw me running horses and asked what i was doing, so i told them. (The barn workers tended to be cattlemen, and busy with other things anyways.) So other students started appearing and helping out as well. By 1982 (i graduated in '77) they had to make up a volunteer roster, there were so many! so they have Jerry to thank for that too! All the Best to all of Jerry's friends...Thank you for making her funeral a lovely memory! (you too, humphrey miles!) Cheerio!

Jerry was a wonderful lady, we so appreciated to be able to go to the infirmary when we were not feeling well and her loving support and care, helped us so much. On a personal note, it was through Jerry that I was connected to Stratford General and continued my nursing student days there, due to her helping make that happen. I will always be indebted to Jerry for that, as the whole world opened up for me at a time when I most needed it. Thank you Jerry.

I am one of the scores of Sick Kids nursing grads who was looked after so lovingly by " Miss Gerow" in the infirmary as a student. Along with Dr. Fujiwara , Gerry made sure we were well enough to return to duty before we could be discharged. Thank you Gerry !!!

So sad to hear of Thora's passing. I could never get used to calling my cousin Jerry, and always called her Thora and she always called me Ann. I guess we liked those nicknames because my Dad was called Jerry by everyone. She was an amazing women and our family was always so proud of her. I shall miss our sadly not very frequent phone calls. I now have no one left in our family to as questions pertaining to the history of the Gerow and McDonald families. I seem to be the last of our generation. My sympathy goes out to her many dear friends who have been like family and so kind to her. c

I cannot remember a time without Jerry as she was part of my family since I was born. Jerry was going to university and in exchange for room and board she helped Mom with 4 children 5 and under. My very first trip away from home and on a train was with Jerry as she took me home to her family for the weekend. It is one of my earliest memories and a very fond one. Because I was the baby of the family she was my second Mom but we all adored her. She has always enjoyed catching up on our family news and I loved her communications as well. Her travels were amazing! Jerry was an incredible woman and it was such a privilege to have known her. I know she will be missed.

Jerry"s determination and leadership inspired the careers of many individual nurses. Indeed, she inspired the entire profession of Nurse Practitioners in Ontario. Her spirit, commitment and vision continue in us .

I remember Jerry well. She was working with the Toronto VON in the 1950s and at a party I reneged on her bridge bid. She was not pleased. Rest well, nr
