Jetta Bickford

Obituary of Jetta Florence Georgina Bickford

Jetta Florence Georgina Bickford, wife of the late James Bickford, passed away on March 15, 2023 under the care of the Sunnybrook Palliative Care Centre in Toronto .  Jetta was born in Calgary on March 31, 1930, the first child of the late Merlin Goodger-Hill and Nora Richmond Goodger-Hill.   She was just two weeks short of her 93rd birthday at the time of her death.   She moved to the Montreal area at the age of two and a few years later moved to Bedford, England to stay with her grandparents.  Here she became close friends with her cousin Madeleine.  She returned by ship to Canada with the rest of her family in 1941.  She attended Montreal High School and Huntington Academy and then went on to MacDonald College.  In 1952 she married Jim Bickford, the love of her life. She taught school for a time but the demands of her husband’s career took her to live in Jamaica for three years and then to London, England for another three years.  They settled in Toronto where they lived for over 50 years.   She leaves behind her sister Nola and nephew Sean; her brother Trevor, and nephew Marc (Tatiana); her sister-in-law Carol and niece Kyenta (Claude).  She was predeceased by her youngest brother Gareth. She will also be missed by several grand-nieces and nephews.

Jetta was a caring, fun loving person who made many friends wherever she lived, and kept them for life.  She loved to travel and did so extensively.  She volunteered with many organizations and was always there for those in need.

There will be a gathering for those who knew Jetta at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 17th at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, followed by a reception.  She will be interred beside Jim in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
