Obituary of Jim (James) Trainor
Left us on his own terms at the age of 63 kicking the darn disease that inflicted him for more than two years to the curb. Jim was born in Ottawa on September 29, 1959. His mother Moyra was a retired nurse and his father Jack Trainor worked for the CBC, so the family lived in Ottawa ON, Bedford NS, and Winnipeg, MB before settling into Mississauga when the kids were teens. Jim grew up playing hockey in Winnipeg with his twin and younger brother and he continued playing and even coaching into his teens. Jim had a great group of friends that enjoyed congregating around the Trainor family home at Felina court and attending Cawthra Park Secondary School together.
Jim relished his university years, making more amazing friends. He graduated from McMaster university with a Political Science degree. During the summers, Jim discovered one of his favourite jobs at a fly in fishing camp in Northern Ontario working as a fishing guide where he met one of his best friends Bruce Gradwell. As a university grad Jim entered his career in sales, first in trailer sales and then he transitioned to the adhesives industry in 1988, working until his illness in 2021.
Jim found his best friend in wife Judy (Laidlaw) and he and his quick wit were a welcome addition to the Laidlaw family. Jim and Judy moved from Mississauga to Port Stanley, Ontario in 1993 so that Jim could sell adhesives to customers in Southwestern Ontario. Jim and Judy immersed themselves into the community and they enjoyed raising their daughter Meghan in Port Stanley. Jim was a member of the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club where he met many lifelong friends and he loved playing old timers hockey with the Port Stanley Cardiacs.
Over the course of his career, Jim was a Sales and Business Development manager for various multinational adhesive and finishing technology companies. Jim travelled extensively for his work, and he was a recognized expert in his field. Throughout his career he developed long term relationships with colleagues and customers around the world.
In 2018 Jim and Judy moved to Etobicoke to start a new chapter and they had a ball reconnecting with old friends and they took advantage of the proximity to Toronto events and being closer to their daughter Meghan in Ottawa.
Jim experienced quite the battle with his health the last two years and he never said “why me?” He remained positive yet practical and looked for the humour in every situation. He will be remembered for his kind heart, wit, smile and his “Jim-isms”. As he always said; “It is what it is.”
Jim will forever be loved and missed by wife Judy (Laidlaw) and the apple of his eye, daughter Meghan. Predeceased by parents John (Jack) and Moyra Trainor, in-laws John Donald and Eliza Mary Laidlaw and sister-in-law Susan Trainor (Payette). Brother to John (Sue), Kevin (Deb) and Mary (Bradley). Uncle to niece Kelsey, and nephews John, Mike, Shayne and Cody. Jim was very fond of his Trainor, Morkin and Smith cousins located across the country.
Jim will be honoured at a private tribute and luncheon on Thursday April 6th at Humphrey Funeral Home at 1403 Bayview Avenue Toronto. No flowers please. Jim loved animals and nature so please consider donating to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation in Mount Brydges Ontario or Hope for Wildlife in Seaforth, Nova Scotia as you remember Jim.
