Daphne Piil

Obituary of Daphne Anne Piil

Piil, Daphne Anne

December 8, 1929 - March 26, 2023

Daphne passed away peacefully with her son holding her hand in Sunnybrook on Sunday evening after a period of declining health.  Daphne now rejoins her husband and life partner of 54 years, Bruno who passed away in 2021.  Predeceased by her parents, Douglas Holt and Evelyne Thomas.  Daphne is survived by son Douglas Bent Piil and his wife Amy, her grandchildren Alexander Holt and Emma Christine and by son Andrew Oskar Piil. Daphne is also survived by her sister Heather Hardcastle and her nephew John (wife Lori) and her niece Alison (husband Emory).  From her marriage, Daphne is survived by nieces, Viivi (husband Stan and son Matti), Ingrid, Miriam (husband Morris), Tricia (husband Randy), Monika (husband Jim), Astrid (husband Tom) and nephews Ulo (wife Valve), Peeter, Henry (wife Mary), Alan (with Lynne).  We all and many more knew that Daphne was a very special, intelligent and compassionate woman, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, caregiver and friend.  Together, Daphne and Bruno were a remarkable team and built an incredible life together here in Canada.  Success for Daphne was never easy, however, her tenacious spirit and a "never give in" persona formatively acquired in The Lawrence School of Lovedale India, allowed her to overcome all of the challenges life presented.  Daphne made people around her better people through her kindness, generosity and wisdom.  She graced the halls of Toronto East General for over 38 years beginning as a registered nurse and ascending to the highest levels of senior leadership.  Throughout those years and beyond Daphne provided countless people with encouragement, support, care and comfort.  She instilled a sense of independence and curiosity in her children that led to global travels and lives of exploration and adventure.  In retirement, Daphne and Bruno cruised the world highlighted by safaris in Africa.  She was incredibly proud of her grandchildren and their numerous academic and athletic accolades.  Daphne will be deeply missed by the many family and friends left behind, however, she has finally been reunited with a mother who died when she was only 3, her inspirational father and her adoring husband.  Please rest in Peace.

The family will receive family and friends outside in York Cemetery, Section 16 (by the Piil plots), on Thursday March 30th.  We plan to gather at 2:00pm and share a celebration of life starting at 2:30pm.
