Maria Hyatt

Obituary of Maria Ines (Ney) Hyatt

With great sadness, we share the passing of Maria Ines (Ney) Hyatt, on January 1, 2023. Maria was the beloved wife of the late Horace (Bud) Hyatt, and will be greatly missed by her daughter Jenny Hyatt, son-in-law Russ Groves, adored grandson Charlie Groves, and her siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and many more family and friends in both Canada and Mexico.

Maria was born into a large, close-knit family in Andocutín, Mexico. She worked in the social and healthcare sectors in Mexico City until a fateful Acapulco vacation, when she met and fell in love with her future husband, Bud. In 1975 they married, and with characteristic daring and optimism she relocated to Canada and began a new life.

Maria never backed down from a challenge, and despite dearly missing her home and family, she took on learning a new language, meeting a new family, house building in the Kawarthas, and Canadian winters – all with grace and humour. Luckily, her outgoing nature made it easy for her to form connections and make friends everywhere she went. The family traveled back to Mexico annually, and family reunions always found Maria and Bud singing ranchera songs with her cherished siblings at the end of the night.

Maria always wanted to be of service; whether it was volunteering at Toronto hospitals, teaching dance and cooking classes at her daughter’s schools, canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society, running workshops for Look Good Feel Better, helping at bake sales, or simply lending an ear to family and friends.

With her radiant energy, Maria was exceptionally suited to her retail work. She loved meeting people, helping them find what they were looking for, and patiently offering her time when the advice they needed wasn’t just about cosmetics or fragrances. Her colleagues too, felt like family, and the feeling was mutual.

Maria’s greatest joy was being a wee-wee (abuela) to Charlie, her “principito”. They spent many days and nights together playing rambunctiously, having patio lunches, baking, building Lego, watching telenovelas, and laughing at each other’s silliness.

Maria leaves a rich legacy of wonderful relationships and will be fondly remembered by all who knew and were touched by her.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home – Rosedale Room, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 29th. Reflections will be shared at 4pm and there will be refreshments.
