It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Esther, who was born in Budapest, Hungary.

Because of the oppressive Soviet occupation of Hungary after World War II, as a teenager and unaccompanied by family members, Esther fled to a British refugee camp in Austria. From there, she resettled in England. Passionate about healthcare, Esther graduated from the nursing program and worked at various hospitals in London, where she made many lasting friendships.

Esther immigrated to Canada in 1955 to join her sister, Judith. She settled in Toronto and continued to work as a Registered Nurse. Esther had the good fortune to reconnect with a childhood acquaintance, Baron Joseph Louis Bottlik (deceased 2000) whom she married in 1973.

Esther passionately devoted herself to her profession. With her excellent organizational skills and her keen attention to detail, she came to oversee the preparation and organization of surgical rooms at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she enjoyed a long and rewarding career until her retirement. Esther also assumed many leadership roles in the Hungarian community and continued to develop enduring friendships in Canada.

Esther was a kind and a considerate woman. Although she exhibited the stylish and dignified demeanor of her times, she was an exceptionally modest person. She will be greatly missed by her family in Canada and in Europe, and by her many friends and faithful bridge partners.

We wish to thank all the staff at Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor for their compassionate care. Donations can be dedicated in Esther’s honor to Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor or Mount Sinai Hospital.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. Information will be available on their website at www.humphreymiles.com, where you may also post condolences.
