Obituary of Mary Ellen Hayes

MARY ELLEN HAYES (NEE HOGAN)

April 17, 1926 - Nov 5, 2022
 

Passed away peacefully after a short stay at Sunnybrook Hospital. Born in Toronto to Patrick and Bernadette Hogan, she was the eldest and loving sister to the late Anne O'Brien (the late Ted), the late Frank (Marie) and is survived by her brother Bob and her sister-in-law Shannon who have fond memories of her and will miss her.
 

Wonderful and loving mother to her four children, Bill (Margaret), Anne Marie (Al), Eileen (Tim) and John (Charlene). She will be greatly missed by her ten grandchildren and seven (soon to be eight) great grandchildren who adored her. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was a great support in helping to raise her grandchildren.  She had many opportunities to travel throughout Canada, the US and Europe with her children, grandchildren and friends. She will be remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Canada and the U.S.A.

Mary Ellen was an English teacher for many years at Thistletown Collegiate in Etobicoke thoroughly enjoying her career. She was instrumental in instilling the love of reading to her family and many other people.  Upon retirement, she volunteered at Sunnybrook Hospital for 30 years. Mary Ellen was nominated by Sunnybrook to be recognized for her outstanding work, subsequently being awarded the impressive Ontario Volunteer Award in 2020.  She was also an active member of The University Women's Club.  She was a very talented person who started knitting at age 12 and shortly after started designing knitting patterns, creating masterpieces.

We will miss our mother terribly but take comfort in knowing that she lived a long and happy life.  Her family would like to thank Sunnybrook for making her feel so valued as a volunteer and then treating her with care and compassion during the last week of her life.   A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 24 Cheritan Ave, Toronto on Friday December 2 at 11am with a reception in the Church Hall following the Mass.
