As her assistant of many years at Legal Aid, I had the honour and pleasure of knowing Joan through many good times and bad, and had the greatest affection and respect for her as both a colleague and a friend.
She flattered me with a candour and trust that I hope was always justified, and was indeed a mentor to me in many respects.
Interesting in both her professional and personal anecdotes and insights, she will always be remembered as a person of significance in my life.
Her strength of character, devotion to family, and commitment to justice set an example for all.
I had admittedly drifted out of touch with her for some time now, but she was frequently in my thoughts, and will be sorely missed.
My deepest and most sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all others touched by her passing.
