It is with great sadness that we announce that Ewen has passed away, but at the same time, we will always remember him and how lucky we were to have had him with us for so long.
Ewen was a man of great intelligence, wit and charm. A very proud Canadian, Ewen was also very proud of his Scottish ancestry. Family legend has it that Ewen’s father named him after the hero in the Scottish novel “Flight of the Heron.”
Ewen was predeceased by his parents, Lewis Morrison and Thelma Belyea, his sisters, Margaret, Thelma and Janet, his younger brother, Donald and also by his first wife, Shirley Ann Rogers.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen, his soulmate and adventurous traveller of more than 36 years, his daughter, Jennifer Lynn (Eric), son, Andrew Lewis (Andrea) and grandsons, Connor Adam Morrison and Graham Elliott Morrison.
Most of his elementary and high school years were spent in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and when he was accepted into Queen’s University, he became part of the large and legendary cohort of students from Northern Ontario who would travel the rails to school and home each semester. He always recounted getting off the train at Union Station in Toronto and going across the street to Fran’s for breakfast, before completing the last leg to Kingston.
Ewen graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston in 1959, was immediately hired by Bell Canada and, through the years, worked in increasingly higher management positions in various locations throughout Ontario and Quebec, becoming the Chief Engineer, Central Area. His next moves were to Toronto, as Assistant Vice-President, Marketing, and thence to various Northern Telecom Sales and Marketing positions. His tenure at Nortel saw him head up the Nortel project to rebuild the telephone system in Trinidad and Tobago, saw him serve as their President of Caribbean and Latin America (CALA), based in Miami, Florida, saw him establish their Atlantic Canada division, based in Halifax, and lastly to serve as President of their subsidiary TTS Systems Ltd., from whence he retired.
While Ewen had an outstanding career in executive management positions, he will most be remembered for his intelligence, his great wit, his immense charm, and his engaging personality. A storyteller and a man of many talents and curiosities – golf, fishing, photography, rustic Canadiana, planning surprise events – he was kind, compassionate, generous and humble. He loved art and probably never went to an art show where he did not support the artist by buying a painting. He was also an avid Maple Leafs fan, never giving up hope. Maureen and Ewen travelled the world, often seeking out the places other people have not yet visited, enjoying good food and fine wine. And new acquaintances. His fishing rod went with him to the High Arctic where he successfully snagged an Arctic char that immediately made it to the dinner plate.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) for a service in the Chapel on Friday, September 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.
