DONALD IAN BROWN

1931-2022

Don passed away on August 18th with Brenda, his wife and closest friend for over 30 years by his side. He was predeceased by parents Arrol and Estelle, his brother Graham (Barbara) and his first wife Doris.  Dad to Karen, Deborah (Hugh) and Stephen.  Grandy to Heather (Melad), Scott (Leah) and Daniel (Meredith).  Great Grandy to Harrison, William and Thomas.

Don spent his formative years in Montreal where he was born and joined the workforce in 1950 as a clerk with the international insurance brokerage firm of Johnson & Higgins (Canada) Ltd.  In 1965, he accepted a partnership at E.A. Whitehead Ltd., a well-established Montreal brokerage.  In 1970, Don and his family moved to Toronto where he was charged with the responsibility of establishing a new office.  In 1975, he returned to Johnson & Higgins as President and CEO where he remained until retirement in 1994.

He stepped back into the insurance world in 1997 for a few years as Co-Founder of Jones Brown Inc. with his long-time friend and colleague, Brian Jones. During his career, Don served on a variety of community Boards and Committees.  He enjoyed being President of the Montreal Central Lions Club and Governor of Expo’s Inter-Service Council (1966-67) and President of the Toronto Board of Trade (1993).

Don was a sports buff throughout his life and played baseball, hockey and football in his youth.  Don was a lifelong Habs fan and avidly watched the Habs, Blue Jays and Montreal Alouettes in his later years.   He was an early member of The Cambridge Club, and as an avid golfer and curler, was at one time a member of The Royal Montreal GC, St. George’s Golf & CC, The Toronto Golf Club, Sara Bay CC and The Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association.

Thank you to Dr. Scott Gledhill and RN Sarah Medel for their wonderful care.  Expressions of sympathy, only if desired, to the charity of your choice.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
