I was a student-athlete (women's basketball) at U of T from 1979-84. When I saw Dr. Cameron's obituary in the Globe and Mail, I remembered him well, even though he only treated me a couple of times. On one occasion I was a homesick rookie with a stubborn ankle issue. I remember he said something like, "That sounds very painful," delivered after some compassionate listening and examination and with a kind demeanor and genuine empathy. Four words that seem to have stood the test of time over four decades. I carry them with me still as I now work as a hospital chaplain. He has my enduring gratitude for making my experience back then more human and humane. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Wendy and family,
I am sorry that I missed the memorial for John as I was out of town. I had the pleasure of working with John from the time of his resident training to when he became a colleague at the Toronto General and Mount Sinai Hospitals. He was truly a gifted orthopaedic surgeon in every way. He was outstanding in the operating room tackling the most difficult lower extremity deformities with his innovative osteotomies. He also was an excellent arthroplasty and sports medicine specialist, and his expertise was utilized by other orthopaedic surgeons who referred their most difficult problems. He was loved by his patients, students and all members of the health care team, and he will be missed. I was very fortunate to have worked with him. Please accept my condolences to the family.
Kind regards,
Allan Gross

We are saddened to hear of the passing of our beloved Dr. John Cameron. He was so instrumental in advancing our field of Orthopaedic Surgery innovating, evaluating, and teaching advanced surgical skills in complex knee joint reconstruction. So passionate about patient centred care, he changed the lives of many for the better in treating their joint instability and arthritis conditions. Rest assured, he leaves a lasting legacy having mentored several of our current hospital and university surgeon faculty who carry on his compassionate approach and expert specialized care.
We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Wendy and their loving children and grandchildren.
With much admiration,

So saddened to hear of Dr. Cameron's passing today. I had the pleasure of Dr. Cameron performing a high tibial osteotomy in 2008, and total knee replacements in 2015 and 2016. Thanks to him I skied over 30 days last year and at a very high level. I can do most everything that my 65 year old friends do and I owe it all to Dr. Cameron.

Wendy,
I don’t even know how to begin this note as nothing I say can even try to help mend the chasm of loss you are suffering.
John was such an incredible person and your life together was full and rich with adventure, travel, family and friends. Rod and I were so lucky to have had you both in our lives and our time together, particularly sharing our Tasmanian home was so very special for us!
As we all know, you can’t have loss without love and we saw how deeply you not only loved but respected and valued each other, it was a privilege to witness!
Please know we will be there if you need to share a story of John or sit in silence with a glass of his favourite wine to laugh or cry over…you know where to find us even if on a screen from another hemisphere!
We send you our deepest condolences and are thinking of you and your beautiful family!
Love always,
xo Kim and Rod

To all the Cameron family - my sincerest condolences on John's passing. I was one of John's Fellows at the Holland Centre from July 2012 - June 2013. He was a great Doctor, surgeon and mentor. His OR list and clinic was a catalogue of great pathology dealt with very well and with a VERY personal touch. I gained immeasurably from my contact with him, especially in terms of knee mechanics, clinical assessment, but also life skills, culture, fine wine, travel, sport and so much more. I still pass on his teaching to my registrars along with stories of my time at the Holland Centre. His spirit lives on not only in Toronto and Canadian orthopaedics but in those who have been privileged enough to be his fellows world-wide. My highlight with him out of work was our trip to Georgian Bay 2 weeks before leaving Canada. I am sorry not to be there on Friday as I had always hoped we would see each other again.
Love and Prayers, Hussain and Victoria Kazi and Family

To John's family and friends,
I join with you in sadness in hearing of John's passing. Although I only knew John for a short time while cycling together, he immediately stood out as an amazing athlete who always pushed the pace. While chatting during our rides, I learned about his cherished family and his lifelong love of sport and fitness. I had to learn from others what a talented orthopedic surgeon he was. He was remarkable in so many ways, but remained modest, kind and gentle. I was blessed to have known him. He will be deeply missed.
My condolences to you all.

Dear Mary, Martha, Sarah, Sandy and David,
I join with so many in sadness about the loss of your much loved brother John. Thanks to the long-standing friendship of my mother Barbara Howard, and your wonderful mother, I have warm memories of meeting you when skiing with John and visiting at your family home in Orillia.
It was easy for me to follow John’s great successes in his career, as I worked as a hospital foundation CEO for much of my own career (unknown to John, I think). His extraordinary surgical talent and his leadership were very well known and very much admired among many hospitals - surgeons, patients, hospital leaders and their boards all thought so highly of your brother.
Victoria has been my home since retiring a few years ago, so I will only be able to be at the service for John in spirit.
But what I knew then, and am sure remained constant throughout his life was this. John deeply loved each of you. He worried over you when things weren’t going your way, and proudly enjoyed each of your accomplishments when they were.
I know you will miss him - but hopefully the remarkable similarity in how John’s voice sounded (it is yours, Sandy, or you, David, I can’t be sure!) will let you close your eyes and feel close to John once again.
Sending warm condolences to all,
Darrell (Howard) Gregersen

Dr. Cameron replaced my right-hip circa 1992, and my left hip in 1995. I am now 85 and both hips remain as durable as they were three-decades ago,
John and Wendy would drop-by our home whilst grocery shopping in Parry Sound, on their way to their cottage in nearby Pointe Au Baril.
To Wendy, and the entire Cameron extended family, our prayers are with you at this time. May the God of all comfort and peace hold you in His arms in this time of difficulty.
Sincerely, Bill & Barbara Beagan

To Wendy, JB, Sheena, Anne, Adam, Evie, Maddy, Nora,
I am so sorry to share in the condolences of John’s passing. Although the news brings me so much sadness for the loss I feel in his passing, I cannot help but also to feel such gratitude for the great privilege I had to share with him in the fullness of his life. Georgian Bay was his happy place and in many ways was mine too growing up. I always looked up to him with so much pride and admiration as my Uncle, the accomplished Orthopaedic Surgeon, who owned an “island” :) What I didn’t realize until many years later however, was what was even more moving about him, was his pure generosity, kindness, and humility to share his time and resources with others; something I was lucky enough to experience first hand through time spent together at the cottage in Georgian Bay, the chalet in Collingwood, and his home in Toronto. Regardless of what chapter of life I was in - as a child or teenager tagging along with my parents or a young adult figuring out what type of career I wanted to pursue, I always knew I was welcome at my Uncle’s.
When I think of John, a smile floods my face. There are so many beautiful memories in all the years we spent together, yet one in particular that comes to me is our time spent running together. When I first started to develop in my competitive running career, I used to tease John that our runs together were a good “warmup” for me. Deep down however, I was always blown away by his fitness and the care he took in his health. To me, he was and still is the role model of how I’d like to age, being able to stay active in all the activities that brought him such joy.
Another memory that touches me is time spent together just the two of us on a trip he took to Vancouver for a conference. My parents and brother were out of town, so I drove in to pick him up from his hotel downtown and bring him back to my family’s house in Tsawwassen. We had a lovely dinner at Provence Marinaside, sharing wine, oysters (one of his favourites), and other great seafood dishes. I had just come back from my first big trip to Europe, and remember how beautiful it was to share with him in my experience traveling, and learn more about his own memories, traveling himself. I remember how happy he was to be in Vancouver and how much joy both being at the conference and getting to spend time with our family brought him.
It is not often that you always have the opportunity to share such a beautiful bond with an Uncle and for this I feel truly grateful. A kind, generous, and talented soul, it was a gift to know him and to share life with him. His passing leaves an incredible loss for so many, yet he lives on in our hearts through the love and joy he brought to all through the many lives he touched.
Sending all my love,
His niece Maggie

We were so very sorry to read the news of John’s passing. John was very loved and admired and will be missed by so many people whose lives he has touched in important ways. In addition to being a brilliant physician, he was also a fine human being, always respectful and full of good humour. To Wendy, JB, Sheena, Anne, Adam and the grandchildren.
I am terribly sorry that I share in this condolence for John, Dad, Grandad.
I have been fortunate to spend 30 working years working for the best orthopaedic surgeon in Canada and around the world. I was always happy to get into work and spend the time working for him. Nothing was ever too much trouble to be done.
He always used to love his time in the operating room and doing the surgery that would bring life back to a patient. I also used to enjoy our Friday clinics, whereby he would go sometimes until late in the evening, still seeing them, rather than send anyone away.
We have come through a lot over the years, moving over to the O&A in 1991 , various shutdowns, SARS. Finally his being Chief of the hospital, where he had to attend various meetings, plus doing his surgery and clinics and was instrumental in having the hospital stay in its location.
I will have memories that will always be fresh and will stay with me forever. He will be missed by a great many people in all walks of life.

Deepest condolences to John's entire family.
I was privileged to be cared for by Dr Cameron during my time as a player with the UT Varsity Blues football team, and then later in life when he agreed to replace both my hips His reputation as a superior surgeon was well known, among both patients and peers.
But his connection with his patients was his true strength. Prior to both surgeries, nurses and surgical assistants were amazed that I was as calm as I was.......my explanation both times was, I've got nothing to worry about, John has my back. He was there in recovery as I awoke both times and his super positive affirmation of how well things had gone was a huge boost to my confidence and motivation to recover. John also had a twinkle in his eye as he "scolded" me for burning out one of his diamond tipped drill bits. I am certain there are thousands of his patients who hold him in the highest regard. RIP.
