Andrew Borbas

Obituary of Andrew Louis Borbas

Andrew passed away peacefully at his North York home on Monday, July 25, 2022 at the age of 95.  Predeceased by the love of his life Barbara Jane Gilverson, his wife of 57 years.  Much loved father of Andrew and Libby.  Predeceased by his sisters Lucy Rahmer and Lydia Szabados.  He will be missed by the many nieces and nephews from Gilverson and Knight families and grandchildren from the Hua family.

Andrew was born in Budapest on March 15, 1927 to Andor Borbas and Elizabeth Belegrader.  Everything changed as the war came to their doorstep.  Andrew eventually arrived in France and after a brief stay in Lille, reunited with his sisters and mother in Casablanca, Morocco.  In 1959, Andrew arrived in Canada.  It was not long after meeting Barbara at Moore Park Tennis Club, that he was married with a young family and started what would become a successful shoe importing business.

Andrew had three passions: tennis, bridge and service.  He could be a formidable opponent on the court at the Granite Club with the “old boys’ three times a week and at the bridge table with his one and only partner, Barbara.  He cherished his time with the Rotary Club and was humbled at becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

The family wish to thank Dr. M. Jackson, Dr. Andrew Bayley, Dr. David Hajek, Dr. Gideon Cohen and Dr. R. Wald for their outstanding care and whose direction Andrew followed to the letter.  The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22nd.  A service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, September 24th at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to North York Better Living Health & Community Services or SPRINT Senior Care would be appreciated.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
