Jean Young

Obituary of Jean Young

JEAN YOUNG

June 9, 1937 – May 29, 2022

Born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 9th 1937. Wife of the late Andrew Young and beloved mother of Susan (Phil), Craig (Tanya) and Drew (Carol). Nana to Brooke, Andie and Spencer. Sister of the late George Spence of Lincoln, England.

With her best friend May, 19-year old Jean left a tenement in Glasgow and headed to Canada with nothing but fortitude, optimism and some high heels. Jean had acquired work by the second day in Toronto. By age 23 she had met and married Andrew, another Glaswegian expat.  With hard work they carved out a wonderful life and provided a solid foundation for their children. For all of Andrew's flair, the quiet backbone of the family was always Jean. Like a lioness she cared for her clan. She tirelessly supported the children in sport and any endeavor they undertook. Jean gave the children the gift of believing in them.

As a Nana there was none finer. Jean was bright, funny and ready to laugh. Riding roller coasters, having a flutter on the races, having a wee vodka, making cheese dreams. She was the edgy fun Nana.

Jean adored her big brother George.  He was an artist and Jean has requested that she be interred with a small piece of his art to have something of George with her forever.

Jean quoted Jackie Kennedy saying the biggest accomplishment in life was being a good mother. In this she succeeded.  Jean was a beautiful, diminutive, force of nature. She was the beacon who guided us. Without her light the world is much dimmer.

Cremation has taken place.  A celebration of Jean’s life will take place at a later date.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
