Obituary of Jean Anne Cumming
JEAN ANNE CUMMING
Lawyer, Writer, Editor-in-Chief
December 20, 1960 – May 18, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce Jean Cumming passed away of complications arising from her courageous fight with cancer. Jean was the beloved daughter of Bruce and Mayme Cumming, life partner to John Campion and the creator of caring relationships among her siblings, nieces, nephews, great nieces, personal and professional friends alike.
Jean graduated from Barrie Central Collegiate, Victoria College (U of T) with honours, Windsor (JD) and Osgoode (LLM) Law Schools. She became the Editor-in-Chief of Lexpert (Thomson Reuters) where she helped the public and profession appreciate accomplished lawyers across Canada and influenced the profession through rich thought-leadership, with an emphasis on diversity.
Jean lived her life contributing to the broader community in many ways, including: Director of Victoria College (U of T), at Eva’s Place for homeless youth and The Walrus magazine.
Jean’s personal generosity and quiet nobility of spirit touched her family, partner, friends and broader community in an array of daily interactions big and small.
We wish to thank the extraordinary caregivers, including those who offered support and prayers for Jean over the last difficult months and those at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Dr. Raymond Jang), Mount Sinai, Toronto General and Bridgepoint Hospitals.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. A funeral service celebrating Jean’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto. Memorial donations may be made to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or Cancer Research. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
