In 1967 , I was in grade 11 with Robert in Sudbury , and we were of the same mindset . We spoke often about serious things. The traits described by others here - the caring , gentle decency , kindness, wit, curiosity, and the humanism have been amplified by time, but I surely sensed it back then. My father passed away in January 2022, and he was like that too. Maybe not surprisingly , the memory of my time with Robert surfaced recently and I tried to look him up, with no success. We would have picked up where we left off 54 years ago . Robert's devotion to the wider public interest is consistent with the young man I knew, a counterpart to his loving kindness for family and friends . Robert stands beside me in the LoEllen Park Secondary School yearbook photo , grade 11A. I offer my deep condolences to Robert's family. May his stardust memories be with you always.
Scott Dingwall.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Mann's death. I knew him when I was a graduate student at UofT many years ago. Bob would give regular guest lectures on alcohol epidemiology in a class that I helped to instruct and his lectures were always a highlight of the year. I looked forward every year to hearing him return and talk with passion about his latest research and updates in the field. His enthusiasm and kindness were incredibly inspiring and he always seemed to really enjoy teaching and meeting with students. He will be missed.

Dear Family of Bob Mann: what a loss to you, and to the alcohol policy community. Bob was both a gentlemen and a scholar. He was unfailingly kind, patient and generous with both his time and his knowledge. I used Bob’s data in my various roles in Ontario and when I had the alcohol policy portfolio in the BC Ministry of Health. It was always a pleasure and a privilege to work with Bob. Whenever we collaborated, his sense of humour and love of family was apparent. He will be greatly missed.

I first met Bob as a colleague at the Addiction Research Foundation in 1988. He immediately impressed me as a serious and dedicated scientist in the important field of drinking and driving research within our prevention studies group. He also was very approachable and friendly, and had a strong sense of humour. Later, our paths crossed at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine (now Dalla Lana School of Public Health). Bob’s most recent leadership role at CAMH continued to facilitate the important repeated cross-sectional surveys of Ontario secondary students (OSDUHS), which have provided extremely useful data on trends in substance use and a number of other health-related behaviours. These policy-relevant surveys have provided many of us (including Bob himself) with high quality data for secondary analysis, publication, and evidence-informed policy application. Bob exhibited true public service through his important research and his commitment to improved public health policy both in Canada and internationally. That is his legacy.

My heartfelt condolences to Bob's family. I have so much respect for the contributions that Bob made to research and health policy, and the positive impacts that he had on those around him. For a while my office was just down the hall and I always looked forward to our chats, which usually started out about research and ended on family and life. I will remember Bob as genuine, humble and incredibly kind and supportive. It was a privilege to have known Bob.

My deepest condolences on your loss. Bob was such an amazing person and he taught me a lot throughout my PhD at IMHPR. We wrote a couple papers together and I learned so much from him, especially how to craft thoughtful responses to challenging reviewer comments. Bob was someone I was always excited to share good news with because he always celebrated and uplifted everyone around him. He will be so deeply missed.

I send my sincere sympathy to Bob's family. I worked with Bob on the Collaborative Program in Addiction Studies at U. of T. He was a staunch supporter of the program from day one and succeeded me as Director. I admired the work he did with respect to drinking and driving - he saved more lives than most doctors! Bob was a great colleague, a true scholar, and a true gentleman. It was a privilege to know him.

Dear Mann Family:
I was very sad to hear of Bob's passing. Although we did not work together directly on any research projects, we were often advocating for the same traffic safety measures and health -oriented alcohol policies. I relied on Bob's research countless times in my legal research. Bob was invariably helpful when I had a question or sought his advice in chasing down information.
Bob was a scholar and a gentleman in the full sense of that term. He will be sorely missed in the health policy field.

Distinguished University, Professor Emeritus

To Bob’s family,
I want to express my profound condolences on your loss. I knew Bob as a colleague at CAMH and we had an occasional collaboration on top of many random encounters. He was a distinguished scientist and advocate who cared deeply about his work and its implications, but he was also an unfailingly friendly person as we stood in line at the Tim Horton’s at College and Spadina. His contributions and his warmth will live on.
