Obituary of Erik Maria Schryer
It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Erik on March 16, 2022 at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Born in the Netherlands in 1948, Erik was the beloved son of Franciscus Leonardus Schryer and Theodora Engelina (Macovich) Schryer. He is predeceased by his father, his sister, Frieda Halloran, his first wife, Sandra MacEachern and his second wife, Maureen McKinnon Schryer.
He will be greatly missed by his mother, Thea Schryer, his sister, Dorothy Hammond, and his brothers, Frans, Herman, William (Pim), Henry and James Schryer, his in-laws, and his many nieces and nephews.
Erik will also be greatly missed by his many friends who appreciated his wit, humour, and infectious laugh. He was a true renaissance person who could talk about physics, philosophy, music, politics and any other topic that engaged his interest. He was a passionate advocate for the homeless and the visually impaired.
Born with limited vision, Erik never let his limited vision stop him from doing what he wanted to do. He could find his way around in Toronto better than most Torontonians. He worked at the Royal Bank of Canada for many years as a computer consultant. He travelled extensively for the last several years and learned to sing and play the guitar.
The family would like to thank his friends, Tina Torlone and John Edwards, as well as Joan Robinson and the staff at Christie Gardens and Princess Margaret Hospital for their support and assistance during Erik’s final weeks.
A celebration of life to share stories about Erik and music is planned for March 26th at 1:00 p.m. at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville). Proof of vaccination and the wearing of masks will be required. Donations to the Guide Dogs for the Blind International in Erik’s memory would be appreciated; https://gdbinternational.ca/. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
