Dear Elizabeth and Family
I read with sorrow about Joan’s passing. Joan was my mentor. My second job
after graduating with an MBA from York University was at Young and Rubicam reporting to Joan. After travelling abroad for a year Joan encouraged me to join her at BMO where she had recently moved. Best decision ever.
I could not have had a better mentor. She was a stickler for the language and the art of persuasion. After many a rewrite you learned the craft of succinctly putting a position forward whether in written word or speaking to an audience. These are life long gifts I will never lose or forget. Joan was indeed a force with well researched arguments. She rarely lost.
Over the many years I worked with Joan I came to know the person. Her love of the piano; her joy of the Christmas gathering singing around the piano, maybe a gin on ice nearby. She made a great French omelette. She preferred the “just in time “ approach to meetings. Although I do recall one morning when she arrived to work early at 8am; not Joan’s normal routine start , she admitted she had forgotten to turn her clock back with the time change. Too funny.
Joan did have a very successful and diverse career. Although I do recall her mentioning an enviable summer job working in London England in the 1960’s . How much fun that would have been! Perhaps a mini skirt is in the closet. Joan had wonderful travel stories. She was also an expert contractor managing renovations at her beautiful Highbourne home.
You couldn’t know Joan without understanding her joy of family and how special Elizabeth was to her life. Joan was also very supportive with a “spidy “ sense when things weren’t right and would step in with helpful words of wisdom.
I was privileged to have known Joan and grateful for all her support and friendship.
In deepest sympathy

My thoughts and prayers to you Elizabeth, Conner and family. Joan was an amazing woman, and an achiever in anything she set her mind to.
To be absent from the body is to be with the Lord.

I had the pleasure of working with Joan at Young&Rubicam Ltd in Toronto and came to know her as very smart, creative and passionate about doing a good job. She was a tough battler for what she believed in and I also battled with her at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Elizabeth, family, friends and colleagues. My heart felt condolences on the passing of Joan. I will remember her always in her role as the thoughtful, tireless and persuasive leader of the Sheridan Board of Governors. I greatly appreciated her support of me and my team during the early years of my presidency at our beloved institution. She spoke to me often of her regard and admiration for her extraordinary daughter. Joan's dedication as a mother and love for Elizabeth was evident to all. I share in your loss. Most sincerely, Rob Turner

Elizabeth:
Your mother and I were colleagues on Governing Council at U of T. I also knew her through Grace and Peter. She was a wonderful person to know and work with -- smart, accomplished, musical, with a broad range of interests and an impish sense of humour.
On Governing Council, she asked great questions. She will be missed.

I so enjoyed my experience at Young & Rubicam working in the same agency as an absolute Titan. I didn't get the chance to work for Joan on her accounts, but I knew how much she was loved and admired by her Clients. Joan and I had a great chat last time we had a Y&R reunion at the Pilot.
Joan is such a vibrant person our loss is shocking.
My deepest condolences to her family, both immediate and extended.
