My condolences to all of Mavis's family and apologies for my tardiness. I had not seen Mavis in over 30 years, and was thinking of her recently and found this. She was a kind and brilliant mentor to me as a child. I have many great memories of her home in Greenwood especially her attempts to teach me gardening. I'm so sorry for your loss and hope for nothing but the best for her family,
Jason Powell

What a beautiful photo of Mavis.......I am a neighbor of Mavis's when she lived in Greenwood and have missed her since she moved. Nancy and I referred to her as "The Duchess of Greenwood" and much enjoyed her soirées and gatherings. I have also missed the smile, wave and her wit and of course the telephone calls from our Neighborhood Watch Captain. Greenwood has lost a lot of class and character since she has left us.

I met Mavis 7 years ago when I became her friendly visitor and companion. She quickly became someone I admired and respected. The many conversations, games of rummi and laughter we shared became the highlights of my week. I will miss her presence in my life but will hold her deep in my heart. I am grateful for the time I had her in my life. My condolences to her family and everyone who knew her. She was such an amazing person.

Words cannot express how much you meant to me. You have been present for my entire life! From the moment I was born you have been there guiding me along, scolding me when I was a brat and encouraging me when I when I felt directionless. You have always had an incredible talent for drawing people toward you, and for drawing people out of themselves with good will and humour. I remember every Christmas at Greenwood with the entire family and how much heart you would always put into hosting and making those around you feel appreciated – and how you would offer refuge and comfort to those whom you cared for. Yours is a rare breed of humanity that is in short supply these days, and we shall do our damnedest to carry that spirit forward in our own lives and to build homes that you might feel content haunting on occasion!
That New Year’s Eve we spent together at 12 Coxwell Boulevard will forever remain one of my favourites, as I could scarcely have asked for better conversation or company! The opportunity to drink half a bottle of brandy with you and talk about every conceivable thing we could think of is a memory I will cherish for all of my days and will absolutely be a story I tell my own children one day. All in the hopes that they too will share such a magical experience with their own grandparents.
I shall therefore not ask selfishly for you to rage against the dying of the light, but to wish you a pleasant journey into that good night.
Love you forever Grandma! I’ll make sure to keep the kettle hot for you!
Your most peculiar grandson,
Duncan.

Mavis….what a send-off you had…your family and friends did you proud. I only met you briefly over lunch, and loved sharing emails and photos with you. I promise to take care of your garden, and do hope I manage NOT to kill anything. I’ll let your birds and squirrels know that you still think of them, and I’ll keep their food on hand. Wish Covid hadn’t cancelled our lunch visit in the garden, but I’ll think of you as I relax on the deck with my cup of tea, or glass of wine. Wonderful to have known you….and to all the family “take care” and Thank you for including me. Norma. Campbell

Thinking of you at this time, Denise, John, Paul and Peter, but what a legacy your Mum as left for us all to cherish. When I first heard the news my immediate sadness gave way to gratitude that Mavis, through her gift of genuine caring, helped me realize my full potential in life. She will forever remain a beacon of life to me and I will cherish her love and friendship in perpetuity.

Mavis came into my life when visiting John's hospital room to give him a haircut. We hit it off immediately, and eventually I became her at-home hairdresser.
There were many fun and fascinating conversations, much story-telling, and pleasant visits in her beautiful, lovingly attended garden. When out back in the garden, Mavis used a funny little "all-purpose" broom which also served as a cane to steady her. It was about 3 feet high and the bristles were completely flattened, divided in half and curled up on both sides, like a big moustache. Only Mavis could move anything around with that sorry little broom, insisting it "worked just fine, thank you very much, and there was no need whatsoever to replace it!"
Personally, I think that broom belongs in the Smithsonian. Mavis, I love you, I'll miss you and I'll see you later in your new paradise garden, using the same broom no doubt.
With respect and admiration, Lynn Kastner (your favourite hairdresser)

I do not know where I found this poem, but I thought it was suitable for dear Mavis;
To Those I Love...and Those Who Love Me.
When I am gone, release me, let me go...
I have so many things to do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears;
be thankful that we've had these happy years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
how much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for he love you each have shown
but now it is time I travelled on alone.
So grieve for me awhile, if grieve you must;
then let your grief be comforted by trust,
It's only for awhile that we must part,
so bless those memories deep within your heart,
I won't be far away, for life goes on;
So if you need me,
call and I will come,
Though you can't see or touch me,
I'll be near and if you listen with your heart you'll hear
all of my love around you, soft and clear,
And then when you must come this way alone,
I'll smile as I greet you...Welcome Home!
