Thanks to Julie Tamaki and Debbie Fetterley for the moving comments at the service of Art Tamaki's life. Our fondest memories are the off-key singing of Christmas carols with Janis and Jon and the off-kilter wry sense of humour that some folks just could not get. Then there is the making of sushi and sashimi, which like many things in his life, involved rituals and protocols that helped define who he was and cement his love of life and friends. Art will be missed by all,

Art was one of the warmest, funniest and most supporting figures of my childhood. Whether it was around the neighbourhood, at St. James-Bond (in the Christmas Pageants or otherwise), just kicking around Willowbank or, years later, celebrating Christmas together, he was always full of life; quick with a joke or a laugh, but also curious about what I was up to and how he could help get me wherever I thought I might like to go. He taught me to play Snooker - for which I'll be eternally grateful - and taught me about Japan and Japanese culture whenever I had questions. He seemed to live life the way it was meant to be lived: with intention, with love, and with a smile. All the love to you, Thelma, Lisa and Julie. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to see you soon and laugh over great memories.

I was very sad to hear of Art's passing from Merel, a former work colleague of Thelma. Art was a true gentleman with a marvellously dry wit. On an inaugural canoe trip he heard me open a beer can across the water and later remarked to me that he knew that he was going to like canoeing. Then recounting a Bata business trip to Tokyo he told me that people kept talking to him and he did not understand what they were saying. All this with his trade mark Art smile. I will miss him.

Thelma, Julie and Lisa,
I am saddened to hear of Art’s passing. Art always seemed to wear a smile and I never saw him without one. I remember a warm soul. We met when the Julie and Julia went to nursery school at St James Bond and we last saw each other at Wyndemere Country Club in Naples a few years ago. My sincerest condolences to your entire family.

This is a photo from a visit to the Foire de Chatou, a large antique market outside of Paris.
March 13 2002, Art and Thelma were visiting Paris and so was my wife Gerda and I.
How appropriate that we met at the Bataclan street, since Art, Jean-Paul Waisman (Bata France) and I were part of the Bata clan, for many years.
Art was my boss at Bata for a number of years, very fair and understanding, ready to help when necessary.
When Art and I retired we developed a friendly relationship and were meeting for lunch (his favorite place, Memories of Japan in Don Mills) 2-3 times a year.
Last time 22 October, he was in a great shape, very energetic and making plans for the future.
I cannot believe that Art is not among us anymore.
I will miss him greatly.

As a kid, I remember visiting the cottage on Sand Lake while it was under construction - it made a real impression on me. I recall sleeping in the camper while other adults slept in a tent on the under construction second floor.
I remember Art as always happy and enthusiastic. We will miss him.

I’m saddened to hear of the death of Art. I have not seen Art for many years but have fond memories of his being in the Toronto Optimist Drum Corps and contributing to our National Championships. Art was a stalwart; he never complained and was always congenial; he was a good French horn player and corpsman. He was one of those guys who was, well, just always dependable, upbeat, quiet, with a smile on his face and “optimistic.” In reading his obituary and the outpouring of sympathy, it is evident that Art was, as we say, one of the good guys very much appreciated and loved by those who knew him. I have spoken with my Optimists friends, Gord Lefevre and Mike Thys, who have fond memories of Art and are equally saddened and send their condolences. Our condolences go out to George and Lynn and the Tamaki extended family, Dwight and the Angus family at this very sad time. Peace be with you all; you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Thelma, Lisa and Julie
We send our deepest sympathies.
I first met Art when he was a fellow student at Innis College, U of T in 1965. He quickly became involved in many of the college activities playing on sports teams and serving as a member on the student council to mention a few. Linda met Thelma as well at U of T as fellow class mates and later shared an apartment together after graduation.
Art was known for his enthusiasm, sense of humour, quick wit, his mischievous smile and most of all his love of family. We were blessed to have known Thelma and Art all these years and will miss him dearly.

Dear Thelma, Lisa and Julie: Seeing that smile brought back a flood of positive memories of Art. What a good friend, fine husband and wonderful father. We can still see him helping us to load the truck for our first move, greeting us warmly at Castle Knock, looking out at Sand Lake, or relaxing watching the Blue Jays on television. We shared the joys of parenthood and always looked forward to the annual parties and those familiar faces. "Thelma and Art" belonged together and we thoroughly enjoyed sharing stories and experiences over the years. He will be deeply missed by both of us. May the happy memories bring you much comfort now and in the years ahead. Dianne Brown Bennett and Paul Bennett

Dear Thelma, Lisa and Julie,
With our deepest sympathy on your loss. Art was a wonderful person. He was genuine, kind, bright and had a pleasant disposition. I did not realize that he retired so early. Fortunately, it gave him time to travel and enjoy his family and his homes in Toronto, Florida and Sand Lake. He leaves a memorable legacy: impressive career at Bata, loving family, longstanding friends. I will miss his “Hey guy” greeting.

Dearest Thelma, Lisa and Julie words can’t express how deeply saddened we are with the news of Art’s passing.
Thelma, I still remember the day you shared with me that you and Art were planning to buy a place in Florida.
Little did I know that many years later Steno and I would be visiting you in your Naples home and that we would be having some wonderful dinners together on 5th Ave.
Through our time spent with Art we could see and feel the amazing person that he was and how much he loved you, his kids and his grandson and how proud he was of them.
We will miss him, his sweet personality and his great sense of humour.
Comforting hugs are sent your way and may the sorrow you feel in your hearts lighten by the love that surrounds you.

I have so many good memories of this great guy. He was one of the most intelligent, caring and humorous persons I have had the pleasure to know. We were colleagues at Bata, neighbours in North Toronto, fellow kings in the St. James-Bond pageants and best friends. It is heartbreaking that he has passed on so soon. He lived life to its fullest and, while I take some comfort in that, I know he will be so missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with the Tamaki family at this difficult time.

About 30 years ago a chance Golf Pairing at Countryside in Naples, Florida led to a 30 year friendship. Art and Thelma shared much of themselves with us while in Naples. We even driving to the “cottage” on the lake up in the little town Thelma grew up in. Our friendship with Art and Thelma grew so much over the years that Art felt more like a brother than just a friend. We will miss him dearly. Without his wit and worldly insight our lives will be lessened. After two years of COVID caused absence from Naples we were so looking forward to their return this year. We will miss Art dearly. Thelma will continue to be our friend as long as we share a breath. Fondly, Larry and Diane True
