Obituary of John Alan Forbes
Jack passed away peacefully, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, on February 12, 2022, a few days after his 91st birthday. Jack will be profoundly missed by his loving wife, Anne, his children and their spouses; Gordon (Linda), David (Nancy), Cathy (Harald), his eight grandchildren; Davis, Cameron, Adrienne, Arden, Jackson, Georgia, Christina and Leighanna, along with Jack and Anne’s many friends. All would agree, you could not find a better husband, father, granddad or friend.
After marrying in Ottawa 66 years ago, Jack and Anne began building their lives together. They lived in Winnipeg, Richmond Hill, back to Winnipeg, then London, Ontario before finally settling in Toronto. Regardless of where Jack and Anne lived, summers were spent with friends and family at the family cottage in Norway Bay, Quebec. Wherever they lived, neighbours became friends and friends were forever.
Jack’s priority was his family and he showed his love to them every single day. Never a harsh word or raised voice. Always holding Anne’s hand, stealing a kiss and doing the dishes every single night. Watching his kids play sports, often as coach, was one of Jack’s favourite activities. He got the same joy from watching the grandkids. He believed in hard work, honesty and kindness. Everything could be solved with a little extra effort, especially in the classroom or at the hockey rink.
His values and friendly personality made Jack a natural in the insurance business. He enjoyed many successes and awards over his 40-year career, culminating in opening his own branch in Toronto which he ran until he retired. He lived by the line “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
Jack was a competitor in all things, but also true sportsman. He excelled at hockey, tennis, and basketball growing up and remained an avid golfer and tennis player his whole life. Regrettably, Anne could never get him to strap on the skis. He loved to play more than watch, but was still an avid fan of the Leaf’s, Raptors and Blue Jays.
He was quietly generous to those in need with a soft spot for the underdog.
Jack was the family’s North Star, a beacon of inspiration. His memory will burn bright in our hearts.
