My Deepest condolences to JV's loved ones. Mr. V was a teacher of mine in the early 70's at Wolfville High School. He shared many of his passions with his students who are truly better people for that experience. RIP dear Mr. V. Mac Routliffe

Sheila, Stephen and Anna. I was very surprised to read about John's passing in the Herald. He was a wonderful member of our Horton staff who was loved by his students and staff alike. I always enjoyed my chats with him and the caring support he gave me through the Acadia student teacher program. Our old staff definitely is dwindling in numbers. Please accept my sincerest condolences on his passing. He will be missed.

Sheila, Stephen and Anna. Thinking of each of you at this sad time. I worked with John at Horton. He certainly added a great deal to the school and his community. May the many memories that you have as a family help you get through the coming days.

John and I worked closely together at Acadia during my secondments from AVRSB in the School of Ed. at Acadia. He and I had many conversations about individual practicum students, circumstances regarding education in general, politics and fishing experiences. I so remember and enjoyed his jovial and wonderfully cripted verbacity. I continue to use a fly fishing reel and tackle he generously provided me. His contributions to the B.Ed students was widely known and appreciated. He was a valued colleague sharing his insights and expertise generously. I was moved and informed by the service today. A worthy tribute to a life so well lived.

John was not only my favorite schoolteacher (Wolfville High 1975-76) but he became a dear friend. He took an interest in my artistic skills and encouraged me to develop them, even arranging for me to meet with a few professionals in the area, including Alex Colville and Wally Turner, at a time when I was too timid to have approached them on my own. He really cared about his students, helping us to gain confidence and get out of our comfort zones. As the years passed, we stayed in touch. I ended up becoming a history teacher and have appreciated his knowledge and experience as an educator, frequently calling him on the phone to talk about students, teaching, and all sorts of other things. He was patiently waiting for me to finish a painting that he requested a while ago, which I will certainly do. It is with a feeling of great loss that I offer my sympathy to Shiela, Steven, Ana, and the rest of the family.

I'm very sad to hear of John's passing. He was a talented colleague in the School of Education at Acadia University, and much admired for his teaching and organizational ability. I'm very grateful to him, among many other things, for introducing me to the game of bridge--although I was never quite good enough to keep up with him. He had a lively wit and a kind disposition. I was sorry to see him leave Wolfville for Toronto a few years ago, even though the move was entirely reasonable given his need for advanced medical treatment and his love for his family. He used to pop in to see me once a year on his springtime fishing trips to Nova Scotia, and we always had interesting conversations about the meaning of life. I will miss him greatly, and send sincere condolences to Sheila, Anna, Stephen, and family.

I was shocked to learn of John's passing and saddened by the loss of a fellow colleague and excellent teacher. John was a bright light in the field of education: a practical, hands-on, knowledgeable, and creative kind of guy (who I never could beat in chess at lunchtimes at HDHS). His obituary gave me a greater understanding of John’s many interests and talents-a man of seemingly endless energy. My thoughts and my prayers go out to Shelia, Stephen, Anna and all family members.

While I had not seen or spoken to John in years, I was devastated to learn of his passing. During the 10-year period when he worked with us in the School of Education at Acadia University, he was my closest colleague and a dear friend. He had an extensive vocabulary and was highly skilled in public speaking. Whenever I was preparing for a professional presentation or public address, I would find an empty classroom and practice in front of John. He gave feedback on everything from voice projection, to language choice, what to do with my hands, where to look, how to hold myself, and much more. Nothing escaped his notice. I benefitted enormously from his support and feedback, but mostly, I benefitted from his presence during a very important period in my life. He knew so much. We spent countless hours talking about everything under the sun. He even took me fly-fishing once, much to his amusement. I feel an emptiness as a result of his death, but I know without question that I am a better person for having known him. I offer my deepest sympathy to Sheila, Stephen, Anna, and their families. I cannot imagine the magnitude of your loss, but I know you will have a lifetime of exceptional memories. Sadly, David MacKinnon.

Mr. Vaillancourt was my favourite teacher at Horton High School. He taught us many life skills like how to speed read and use a phonebook. He made sure we were all fully engaged in his classroom and would snap his fingers if I fell into a daze. I was just talking about him yesterday, but only found out about his passing today. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

John was an amazing teacher I was fortunate to take both his english and economics classes at Wolfville High. Memorable were the many ways you could say "how now brown cow" and how someone held their cigarette told so much about them. I also had the opportunity to join him as a mason and was always amazed at the accuracy of his ritualistic work.
You will be missed by all of us whose lives you were part of.

We are saddened to hear of John’s passing. Both Mike and I taught at Horton when John was a staff member. We fondly remember the many variety concerts he organized. In Wolfville John was a dedicated member of St. Andrews United Church who worked hard with many church committees. We send comfort to Sheila, Stephen, Anna and families as they work through their difficult loss.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Vaillancourt’s family! He was my English teacher at Wolfville High School many years ago. Oh, how I loved his classes! He was an amazing teacher who engaged us like no others! Years later, we met at a Teacher’s conference and I let him know what an inspiration he was to me. I used many of his ideas in my own teaching. My thoughts are with you ! Marilyn Woodworth-D’Eon

I worked with John as his colleague at Horton, interacted with him when he was the curriculum supervisor and I was the ELA Department Head and always served as a Summer School Teacher. We worked together on many education-related projects. We worked together for years on the annual Variety Show at Horton and on drama productions. Not only that, I am now the President of Tideways and live in the building John helped design and build. His role as a builder is noted in the history I wrote about Wolfville Habitat Co-operative (Tideways). I am pleased to have known John and his family. My deepest condolences to you all.
