Taimi Cronkwright

Obituary of Taimi Diane Cronkwright

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Taimi Diane Cronkwright (nee Veevo) on Monday, January 24, 2022, at Kingston General Hospital, at the age of 80.

Born in Hiiumaa, Estonia on January 15, 1942 to the late Julius & Irene Veevo, the young family of three fled the Soviet re-occupation of Estonia when Taimi was just 2 years old.  First living in Sweden then immigrating to Canada, she grew up in Toronto as part of the close-knit Estonian community who were her lifelong family and friends.

As a faithful follower of Christ, Taimi was an active choir member, Sunday school teacher and volunteer with the Estonian Baptist Church of Toronto.   She loved to travel and had the privilege of visiting many countries in her life. Of particular significance to her was the opportunity to return her homeland once again, this time a free and independent state.

After high school Taimi was educated in office administration and choose a career path with TD bank.  There she worked as a secretary and met her soulmate Bob, and in 1973 they were married.  Not long after the birth of their only child Wendy one year later, they relocated to Kingston.

During her years in Kingston she was a member of Bayridge Bible Church and Bay Park Baptist Church.  Taimi spent many years employed as a school crossing guard and she is still fondly remembered by students who have long since graduated from Archbishop O’Sullivan Catholic School.  She also worked as a staff member with Play & Learn, getting to know a wide network of local teachers during her long tenure, helping them plan and organize their classrooms.  However, her greatest joys in life were being a mother to Wendy, and since 2012, becoming a doting Vanaema (‘mima) to her grandchildren Aleks, Leo and Kaia.  Taimi would tell anyone who would listen about their activities, lessons and latest achievements, proudly showing off photographs and sharing their homemade treasures.

Predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Robert “Bob” Cronkwright and her infant granddaughter Dimitria.  Survived by and remembered forever by daughter Wendy, son-in-law Peter and grandchildren Aleks, Leo & Kaia. Sister-in-law Pat Holden, cousins David and Krista Uusoue, Brian, Michael and Kailey.

With COVID-19 precautions in mind, a private service will be held at Newbiggings Funeral Home in Toronto. A memorial service to celebrate Taimi’s life will be held at a later date.
