Dear Mary and Family,
We send our condolences to you all as you journey through Richard's passing. He was a delightful addition to our Trefoil
gatherings, and a witty conversationalist on his favourite topics of mining, geology and geography. He will be missed.

Dear Mary and family, we were blessed to be part of the Rez with you both and to have experienced your care when I lost a job and felt so adrift. You were remarkable in your pragmatic comfort and your care. I am glad for the random chats after church and at your home. I always remember being surprised and delighted by "another new topic" that Dick knew so much about. Will be thinking of you often these next few months as you enter the next stage of your life.

I was fortunate to have Dick Bell teach me in two courses during my BSc degree at Brock University. As part of these courses, Dr. Bell led us on a memorable field trip through the pre-Cambrian of Sudbury and adjacent areas, where he showed us sediments, microbial fossils, volcanic lavas, glacial deposits, evidence of meteorite bombardment literally billions of years old. The field trip Dr. Bell ran as part of our third year course was the beginning of what became my lifelong interest and research in geological and biological processes in deep time. It was probably also the reason why I continue to run so many field trips for my students.

I only was in touch with Dick during the 1973 field season when I was running a government mapping project in the Savant Lake area. He was mentoring one of his students on a thesis topic in the area and often stopped by the camp. He always had a great sense of humor with a smile on his face - always a joy to be around. I never saw him again but I am sorry for your loss. Attached the first photo shows Dick trying to get a problem motor started - the fellow to the left in the boat is his student. The fellow to the right is Chet Idziszeck who was my senior assistant who went on to find many gold base metal deposits and win awards. In the second photo left to right there is the helicopter pilot, myself (walking with my back to the camera) and than Dick - he is standing with his hands in the pocket of his jeans. I thought you would like to see some photos of Dick in a habitat that I am sure he loved being in. Both Chet and I enjoyed Dick's humor very much during that field season. With warm regards - BILL BOND

Mary and family, we were so sorry to read the news about Dr. Bell in the Toronto Star this morning.
Fondest memories. We have a few also. Sharon and I graduated together from Brock in Geology in 1972. We both took Dr. Bell’s Structural Geology course. We both found the course very difficult. Dr. Bell managed to patiently shepherd us both to the end. A few years later while I was completing my Masters Degree at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Dr. Bell and others came down to attend a conference. Of course we invited them to our apartment for supper. The day before we went down to the harbour and bought two large garbage bags of fresh crab (25 cents each) off the boats, enough to fill a lively bathtub. Sharon did not sleep well that night. At supper time we remember the table piled high and everyone ravishing the crab. Dr. Bell was especially gung ho and seemed completely unaware of the flying pieces of crab shells, homemade bread and butter. It was most satisfying and great fun. However, if I could only describe the look on his face when we brought out a whole stuffed baked fifteen pound codfish as part of the main course. Dessert? Blueberry Duff which was only nibbled at. Wine and beer and stories and laughter made the evening complete. That evening has always been one of our all time favourite memories.
Fondest Regards,
Sharon and Wayne Jesseau

Dear David & Family:
My condolences on hearing of the passing of one of my favourite professors (1973 & '74). I never failed to have an interesting conversation with Dick when we crossed paths at the PDAC Convention. As opposed to many of my teachers at Brock who were of a more academic leaning, Dick's grounding in exploration offered us much common ground. As a student, Dick was diligent to the needs of his flock and some of my best experiences were at the field school run in the Madoc-Bancroft area. He was a likeable guy.
