Dear Carla and Sophia,
We were so shocked and saddened to hear about Will’s sudden passing.
It was our honour and pleasure to get to know Will over the years as our children played and grew up together. He was such a kind and devoted father, and a generous and friendly neighbour to all of us.
We will always remember Will for his great intellect, calming presence, warmth and kindness.
We share our deepest condolences with you both, and send you our love and strength at this difficult time.
Our door and our hearts are always open to you.

I got to know Will in the thick of the pandemic because I have always wanted to learn German. Will was kind, patient and I instantaneously felt so easy to trust him. He challenged me but with kindness and fairness, he rooted for me and wanted me to do better. He was an amazing teacher with various ways to engage an adult student, kudos to him. Throughout the learning journey, I discovered that Will is also a fellow country music lover. It's just funny that a German and a Chinese person who both live in Toronto are in love with such an expected music genre.
Will is an international individual, every time we talk about food, he always asked me to send him some authentic Chinese food restaurants that I go to that he can try at times. He's very open minded and I respect that about him.
One of my favorite memory of Will is that we sometimes meet in the middle of the busy streets (Bay and Bloor) so I can pay for my classes - it's just the easiest location for me - my joke is that one day we will be arrested for being mistaken for an illegal drug trade. He always laughs and I will not forget about such a fun memory.
Will, you will be missed!

Dear Carla and Sophia,
Words cannot express the sadness we feel!
Will was one of those rare people who would make everyone feel welcome and comfortable within moments of meeting you. He was one of the most intelligent and warm people we have ever known.
We are grateful to have been invited in your home for meals and playdates and countless evenings of conversations. Will's devotion to his family was always evident in everything he did. His thirst for knowledge and curiosity of life has been an inspiration to us.
Please accept our deepest condolences and know that Will is forever in our hearts!

Dear Carla and Sophia,
We are terribly sorry for your loss.
Will was able amazing man and it is clear that he loved his family and friends so much.
We are so priveleged to have met, gotten to know, and hang out with the three of you since you moved into the neighbourhood many years ago. You are one of the families that our family has gotten close to and remains close to.
We all have fond memories of Will walking Sophia to and from school and to the park. We would wave through our window to say hi and he always had a smile on his face doing what he loved (being with Sophia).
Will will never be forgotten as his memory and legacy will live on in both of you.
Please don’t forget that we consider ourselves an extension of your family, so let us know should you need anything at all - we are steps away and always able to lend a hand or an ear.
We will make a donation in Will’s honour to a children’s charity that is meaningful to us.
With love and sympathy,

Herzlichst Steffen (Balle)

Gedenken in der Trauer
Liebe Carla, liebe Sophia,
Will Du fehlst.
Adieu Willfried
Dein Freund André

Dear Carla and Sophia
It came as quite as shock when I learned from the North Toronto Croquet Club that Will had died. I only met the three of you this year through NTCC and fondly remember playing a few games with Will. A consummate gentleman, I enjoyed his fellowship. May God bring you strength to remember and build the life Will would have desired for you both.

I worked with Will at York University on the Global Suburbanisms project. He was well liked by his colleagues and I enjoyed working with him. I have fond memories of spending time together at the City Institute, on a research trip to Leipzig and attending conferences in New York City and Los Angeles. During a trip to NYC in 2012, I remember going out with friends after a long day of listening to conference presentations. Will liked M and M's chocolates, and stopped at M and M's World to get a large bag of them. I remember sitting in Time Square with Will and other friends chatting and eating M and M's. I have not seen Will in the past few years, but the last time we spoke he was excited about growing his academic translation business. My condolences to family and friends. He will be missed.

It is difficult to comprehend and accept when life is taken away from incredibly nice, kind people in their prime. Will had so much more to live for and give to his family, friends and society but Fate decided otherwise.
He was this gentle giant of a man, amazingly intelligent, knowledgeable, kind, patient and respectful, a pleasure to converse with and learn from. His empathy and ability to listen made him a natural in teaching and sharing his knowledge. It was a privilege to count him as a friend.
Will will be dearly missed by all who knew him and whose life he touched with his honesty, kindness and exemplary love for his family.

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father and son. I know from my conversations with Carla that Will was an exceptionally kind and caring man. Stories of family camping trips, backyard soccer games, and trips abroad clearly demonstrated his love of family. Hoping the memories you created as a family will provide you with some comfort in this time of great sorrow.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Will's family. I am saddened by his passing. I was Will's postdoctoral supervisor at York University in a project on Global Suburbanisms. Will was a valued and much liked member of our team. I considered him a friend and, while we were not in touch in recent years, hold dear memories of spending time with him in the office and on our research travels abroad. I attach a photograph capturing a happy moment, dinner at the famed Auerbach's Keller in Leipzig during a summer school there in 2011. Will was a member of the core teaching team at the time (with colleagues Sara Macdonald and Bob Young).
Mein herzliches Beileid.

We only met Will when the family joined the North Toronto Croquet Club this past summer. Will was a natural at croquet, making a successful jump shot the first time he came out to play. He was successful again the following week, remembering the instructions that he had received the previous week. I believe that he made a successful jump shot every time he came out to play.
While we did not get to know Will very well in the brief time that we knew him, it was very apparent the love he shared with Carla and Sophia. I know he will be missed by family, club members and countless others.

Will was one of the positive things that happened to me at the onset of the Pandemic.
I was always interested in learning German.
Being stuck at home was a prefect reason to start.
Will’s name was the first on Google search so I contacted him.
Very quickly we established an amazing routine. I love the way he made learning fun. He had a special way of teaching.
As in many situations, we developed an “online” friendship that thankfully spilt outside the screen.
Will enriched my life with his warmth, knowledge and varied interests in all that life has to offer.
His life was cut short but his legacy will resonate with me for a life time
Tschüss Will

We had many laughs in the lessons and learned a huge amount and Will inspired us to keep learning. Thank you for everything and our thoughts are with Carla and Sophia. Will and Sash
