Obituary of Peter Reynolds Ely

PETER REYNOLDS ELY

March 11, 1936 - November 10, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter at home in Toronto.

While Peter had a very successful career, his greatest joys were always his family and friends. Starting in the earliest days of modern computing, he met Trudy (née Mounce, a highly successful mathematician and programmer in her own right) while at IBM; next with close family friend Daniel Owen, built a cutting-edge computer card manufacturing enterprise with offices on three continents;  followed by several decades as Whitegate Venture Capital investment/management;  and closing his career in a manner true to his heart and core, helping kids as the Executive Director of Easter Seals Ontario.

As a loving team, Peter and Trudy (1996) proudly cherished and raised four adoring children, Peter Clifton John Jr. (Cathleen), Alison, Jane (Param) and John Ely (Huzur). Peter was also deeply loved as a father by Karen Ely (2014).  Peter’s heart was always particularly buoyed when speaking as the proud grandfather of Dessa and Jackson. Caring brother to Joan Bowker and the late David (Carole).  Cousin and friend to Alan (Marsha) Ely, Adrian (Maurice) Coombs, Elizabeth (Pierre) Racicot and Stephanie (Jeremy) Johnston. Dear uncle to John (Kristina) and Andrea (Peter) Bowker; Jennifer Ely and Elizabeth (Neil) Leduke. In a testament to love’s enduring possibilities, Peter’s marriage to Margaret (née Collyer) brought an additional joyful avenue into his life as he was instantly welcomed as a beloved father, grandfather and uncle by his treasured Thompson family of Chris (Julie), Joanie (Lon), Carolyn (John), David  and their beautiful children. Extended family and friends alike always felt happier in Peter’s presence and his loss will be dearly and deeply missed.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23rd, with speeches in the Chapel from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  A private interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. Proof of full double vaccination plus the wearing of masks is mandatory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Easter Seals Ontario.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
