Obituary of Enid Bennett

Enid Patricia Bennett (nee Penman)

Passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 9 at Mount Sinai Hospital at 100 years young.  Enid was born on March 28, 1921 in Westminster, London, England.

She married John Bennett whom she met in a bomb shelter during the blitz in London. As a war bride she emigrated to Canada and joined him at Camp Borden.  In 1948, John and Enid welcomed Jennifer, their only child.  She became a single mother when Jennifer was 6 and she had to make a new life for herself and her daughter.

She worked at DRG and in the 1960’s she met Bill Weller and they spent many good years together until he passed away in 1994.



Fortitude best describes Enid's resilient strength, which can only come from a very London girl who endured the worst of a world war and still managed to see all the positives in life.

Enid was a pioneer in feminism, single-handedly raising her beloved daughter, Jennifer, despite cultural norms of the 1950s and ensuring her daughter had every opportunity to succeed in education and life. This determination spoke to her resilience and pride, never letting a difficult situation prevent her and her family from excelling.

For those who knew Enid, her laughter and wicked sense of humour will be missed the most. Reminiscing about her youth in London while working at the ministry for the Solicitor General of England during WWII always brought a smile to her face and helped shape her deep-rooted virtues of honour and a sense of duty.  

She continued to keep up with current world events and insisted on voting by mail in the last election. She has spent many years travelling and enjoying her time with extended family in England. Thank goodness for Face Time!

She was predeceased by her parents, Edith Lenorah and Thomas Patrick Penman, and her siblings Michael, Norah, Muriel and Robert.  She was survived by her dearest daughter Jennifer and her step - daughter Lois.  We will miss her words of wisdom, her love and laughter.
