I KNEW GLENN FROM OUR DAYS AT THE BAR —WHEN HE WAS AT SMITH LYONS AND THEN AT GOWLINGS—BUT CAME TO KNOW HIM MUCH BETTER WHEN HE BECAME A JUDGE—PARTICULARLY ON THE COMMERCIAL LIST WHERE MOST OF MY PRACTICE WAS FOCUSED—WHETHER IN CHAMBERS OR IN COURT HE WAS CHEERFUL, DIRECT AND SENSITIVE TO THE ISSUES—BUT BEHIND ALL THAT HE KEPT THINGS MOVING—WE HAD SOME CELEBRATED AND COMPLICATED CASES TOGETHER —SOME WENT TO A HEARING BUT MANY WERE RESOLVED BY MEDIATION—A SKILL WHICH HE HAD IN SPADES—ONE OF MY FOND MEMORIES IS AFTER A VERY BOOZY NIGHT AT THE UNIVERSITY CLUB FOR THE ANNUAL(SEMI-ANNUAL?) CARNIVORE’S DINNER WE CLOSED THE BAR AT ABOUT 3 AM DRINKING IRISH AND TOASTING “A FREE IRELAND”—MY FIRST GRANDSON WAS BORN THE NEXT MORNING —IN WASHINGTON —AND I FLEW DOWN TO GREET HIM WITH MAYBE THE WORST HANGOVER OF MY LIFE—COURTESY OF GLENN! AS A FELLOW TRAVELLER AT ODETTE WE HAD OCCASION AFTER HIS DIAGNOSIS TO DISCUSS OUR SITUATIONS, OUR APPROACH TO OUR ILLNESS AND OUR REFLECTIONS ON LIFE —IT HELPED ME AND I HOPE WAS AT LEAST A LITTLE COMFORT TO HIM—GONE TOO SOON—ONE OF THE REALLY GOOD GUYS.. Dear Susan and Family,
I had the pleasure of knowing Glenn since I was young through his working with my aunt Iris. He always made time to speak to me and share with me some great stories from the legal world which generally ended with some great laughs. When my aunt Iris passed a few years ago Glenn was extremely supportive and engaging which helped make that period of loss a little better for me. We will always be very grateful for his honouring us with his acceptance of being my wedding official.....everyone commented on it. He owed me nothing but his gesture of kindness with his time helped make our loss of Iris a lot easier....I will never forget that. A true gentleman!
I am so sorry for your loss.....he was one of a kind. If I can do anything do not hesitate to ask.

“Find a permanent seat” said the Professor of the first year UWO business 20 course. I conscientiously looked for the smartest person in the room and planted myself beside Glenn Hainey, I was right. Glenn had a major influence on my life.
Though we did not keep close contact after university I will always remember how he introduced me to skiing and our memorable trip to Mount Tremblant and staying with his family in Montreal. His Father Alex hired me for my first job after university. Fifty-one years later after first sitting down with Glenn, though saddened by his passing, I am most grateful of our time together.

Dear Susan,David,Laura and Michael
My deepest condolences on this sad and untimely passing of a true gentleman.
I had the pleasure and privilege of spending so many memorable and fun times together, from the Upper Canada days to the hey days of Western University.
Memories that live on forever.
Like everyone else we are truly feeling the loss in some many ways.
In 70 short years his accomplishments are many and he touched the lives of so many in such a positive way even when playing golf together at Rosedale and suggesting it could only get better .
We will miss his tremendous sense of humour and light hearted quips.
You all remain in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
God Bless
Peter and Deborah Murphy

Susan, David, Lo and Mike,
We send you our deepest condolences on Glenn's passing. Many many memories of good times on the slopes both at the Peaks and Whistler. A spirited and energetic dad, a superior joke teller (Although we were never quite sure of the intended accent) He will be terribly missed by family, friends, colleagues .... just a wide circle of people who loved him and enjoyed his company.
Sending our love... Rob and Gill, Claire and Andrew Anderson.

I first met the gregarious Glenn when we worked together at the Ombudsman’s Office in the late 70s. He spearheaded a team of mostly young, dedicated individuals who wanted to make a difference. We all worked very hard but also played very hard and Glenn was always at the party. For a man of small-ish stature, he lived very large. He will be missed and vividly remembered by all of us whose lives he touched and whose names he never forgot. My deepest condolences to his family. Fondly, Bonnie Whittaker

Glenn and I became friends over the past ten years; our paths frequently crossed as Judges. We shared many meals, had much laughter, and made good memories. Glenn's big warm heart always managed to lift the spirits of those with whom he interacted. He will be greatly missed within the judicial community, but of course, he will be missed especially by his family. I send my sympathies to all family members, and pray that you will find comfort from the many good memories you shared with Glenn during his time among us. From Bill Goodridge (NL)

I am very sorry for your loss. I met Glenn many years ago when I was a brand new lawyer and found myself in difficult circumstances with another lawyer. Glenn gave me great advice, attended court with me and resolved the whole thing. He also didn’t accept payment! He was incredibly kind and supportive and I was very saddened to hear of his death.

I had the honour of being a colleague of Glenn’s for nearly 30 years, first at Smith Lyons and then Gowlings after the merger. Glenn was a superb counsel, and a pleasure (and fun) to work with on legal files and firm matters. We were also neighbours of Glenn and Susan for many years in Lawrence Park. Our deepest sympathy to Susan and Glenn’s family at this difficult time. RIP, Glenn, you will be missed by many!

The legal world has lost one of the very finest. Glenn was a very sound judge who dealt with complicated cases with great understanding. He always had a warm smile and an innocent chuckle for everyone in his court. We have lost a very fine man and his family a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Godspeed Glenn. Jim Farley

I met Glenn (Mr. Justice Hainey) when I started my career at Smith Lyons in 1988 as a legal secretary. Glenn was always outgoing and took the time to talk to you despite being so incredibly busy. He was instrumental in working behind the scenes for me to work with Graeme Mew (Mr. Justice Mew) for which I am very grateful. Glenn was the best party planner there could be and his laugh was contagious. I last saw Glenn a few years ago. He was walking on the opposite side of a large hallway in FCP talking on his phone. He saw me and in mid sentence his arm shot up in a wave and he belted out 'hi Holly'. There is no doubt that Glenn will be missed by so very many and my heart goes out to his family and to all who loved him.

Susan, David, Laura, Michael .... Thinking of you and what an incredible loss this is for you. I loved Glenn....he made work so much fun, even when it was hard. He cared about the people he worked with and he went to great lengths to plan these amazing parties and gatherings. When I look back, I know that this must have meant he was away from all of you many nights...and I want to thank you for this sacrifice. I have nothing but great memories of time spent with Glenn, including a virtual wine tasting in early April this year, where he proceeded to hold court at then end of the tasting, and asked each of us about our kids and families and he proudly shared what each of you were doing too. Sharing a favorite photo from a summer student event on his boat...I think 30 years ago. Bj Caruso
