Obituary of George R. Paterson
George peacefully passed away on the evening of Monday, August 9, 2021 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He was 91 years of age. Born in Canada on May 9, 1930, then raised in Aberdeen Scotland, he would later return to Toronto in the 1950’s. He initially worked in real estate development and later joined IBM where he worked for more than 30 years. During the late 1960’s, he was transferred to IBM France where he served for five years in Paris. During the early 1980’s, he served in Hong Kong as Chief Financial Officer for IBM South-East Asia. He would later return to Canada where he retired as treasurer of IBM Canada in 1990. After retiring from IBM, George went on to pursue a career in consulting, in addition to serving on several corporate boards including the Northern Trust and BEST Fund.
George was a fun loving and adventurous person. He loved tennis, golf and swimming as well as traveling the globe during his later years. He developed friendships in Toronto, Hong Kong and Florida which have stood the test of time. George was always open to new experiences and loved drinking Malbec and scotch. He will be missed by many friends and colleagues. His goal was always to celebrate his 90th birthday; a goal which he surpassed by more than one year.
George is survived by sons Gordon, Stephen and Robert; daughter-in-law Christine; and granddaughters Kate and Brooke. His wife Helen Jane Paterson passed away in 2010 from cancer.
A private visitation and service will be held, followed by interment in Mount Hope Cemetery. For those wishing to attend the service, it will be live-streamed.
