Obituary of Margaret Sacheverell Christie

MARGARET (PEG) SACHEVERELL CHRISTIE

(nee Gisborne)

Died peacefully at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre (K-Wing) on August 3, 2021 at the age of 99.  Peg lived a full and happy life, and will be remembered as kind, thoughtful and gracious.

Born in Ottawa and raised in Toronto, Peg was the daughter of Guy Sacheverell Gisborne and Margaret Constance Schreiber Lambe, and the sister of Caroline (Austin) Macpherson (2018).

She served proudly in the WRCNS (1943-1946) during WWII, and in recognition of her service, received a Bletchley Park Commemorative Badge from the British Government.  After the war, Peg enrolled in Architecture at the University of Toronto – the only woman in her class.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1951, along with her future husband of 55 years, Chris (James Henry Christie, 2007).  After graduation, Peg practised briefly with the architectural firm of Marani & Morris.

In 1953, Peg and Chris moved to Stoney Creek, where she was actively involved in the community, the Anglican Church of Our Saviour the Redeemer, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Chris’ architectural practice in the Hamilton/Niagara region.

Peg was the devoted and deeply loved Mum of Jim (Sarah Pepall), Joan (Jeff Robinson), Peter (Nancy) and Ann.  She was the adored Grannie to Jim (Carol) and Julie (Scott) Robinson; Gillian and Fraser Christie; Drew (Deanna), Erin, Lisa, Grace and Megan Christie; and Great-Grannie to Charlie and Cole Robinson.  Peg is also survived by her nephews, Andy and Ian (Dagmar) Macpherson, her great-nephew, Jeffrey Macpherson, and her cousin Jim Leach.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre staff, who were Peg’s family during the pandemic.  A private family service is to be held.  In Peg’s memory, donations to the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, Toronto; Church of Our Saviour the Redeemer, Stoney Creek; Community Living, Mississauga; or The Owl Foundation, Vineland would be greatly appreciated.
