Brian Fittje

June 17, 1975 – June 13, 2021

A humble, kind and loving soul lost to us at the age of 45. Brian was a perfect husband and partner, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law and uncle and he was so loved.

Brian is survived by his wife, Roxana Chis, his parents Mary and Keith Fittje, his sister and brother-in-law Andrea and Paul Fleming and his niece and nephew Kaitlyn and Connor Fleming.

Brian was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a perfect baby boy with the most beautiful blue eyes. Brian was quiet and reserved growing up, but loved by all who got to know him. He was a happy child, with a permanent smile on his face. He was introverted, inquisitive and intelligent. He played softball, bowled, loved fishing and played the saxophone growing up.

After college, Brian followed his sister to Texas, which was the beginning of his travel adventures. Ultimately, he would live in Dallas, Houston, New Jersey, California, Michigan before finally settling down in Toronto after marrying the love of his life.

Brian cared deeply about his wife Roxy, he trusted her completely and dedicated himself to their life together. Their relationship was a testament of what it truly means to be loved and to love unconditionally.

Brian was kind and loving and he had a huge heart. He loved animals. There are countless stories about him caring for his bunnies and dogs growing up.  His love for animals grew with him. A perfectly pure soul, he was able to make connections with all other innocent animal souls, whether they be stray cats met on vacation, iguanas, large parrots, goats or cows. And the bond was reciprocated. Despite not being keen on keeping a budgie as a pet, Brian is almost solely responsible for raising the smartest budgie, who fittingly calls himself Fittje bird.

Brian’s life was cut short by glioblastoma multiforme.  Brian was the epitome of positivity, a glass-half full kind of guy. Even after he got sick, he never complained. He adjusted to his new physical and mental reality without protest, reminding everyone that he had a lovely 45 years of life and for that he thinks himself fortunate.

As we put Brian to rest, we said goodbye to only his body. His spirit, his soul, his kindness and positivity live on in the stories people are sharing of how he touched their lives, in the love that is visible in the eyes of our family and friends. Things will never be the same – but the world is better for the years Brian lived.
