After finishing my Christmas card for Janet last week, I visited McDougall Scientific's website to find her address, only to learn that she died 6 months ago. I am very sad and still processing the shock of this belated news.
I met Janet 9 years ago, shortly after I finished my Master of Science degree in statistics at the University of Toronto. I had just begun my first full-time, permanent job in statistics, and I was attending the 2012 annual workshop organized by the Toronto Applied Biostatistics Association (TABA) and the Southern Ontario Regional Association (SORA) of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). Having been a sponsor for many years, Janet brought her company's staff to attend this event, and I met her over a networking lunch with other statisticians. She was funny, engaging, and generous with her advice to me and other young statisticians. In the following year, I organized the first career-advice panel at that same event, and Janet kindly volunteered to be one of the speakers. It was a great success, and the students listened attentively to absorb her and all of the speakers' wisdom.
Since then, we kept in touch regularly and saw each other at networking events for statisticians as I progressed in my career. I lost my job in 2019 during multiple rounds of lay-offs at a struggling company. At that point, I was seeking a more senior and more specialized job, and I wrote to Janet for advice. She was quick to respond and generous with her time, and she was especially wise and encouraging after several disappointments in my job search. In early 2020, a company finally offered me a job that fit my professional interests extremely well and offered more money than any other employer did in my past, and I happily accepted. Janet was very happy to learn of this news. I have succeeded beyond my expectations at this job, and I am sad that I cannot continue to tell her about my progress and thank her for her advice.
Future statistics events in Toronto will feel very different without Janet's energy, humour, and kindness. I will continue to pay her generosity forward by attending these events and passing on the wisdom that I learned from her to younger generations of statisticians.

My condolences to Lynne and to Janet's family on the passing of an amazing, ground-breaking woman. I knew her only briefly n the early 1990's, but was struck by her bright light, keen intellect, infectious laugh, lovely kindness and wonderful connection with her partner, Lynne. Surely there is a star in the heavens that ever holds her light. Carole Bishop

I first spoke with Janet over the phone for a job interview a few years ago. It was an unusual interview in that it was a lively conversation in which I listened as much as spoke, and I could already sense the passion she had for her work. I didn't expect just a few weeks later to be working closely with such a wonderful mentor, leader and friend who was always so ready to welcome me into her office to tackle a new project, challenge, or just chat about our family, dogs, and life in general. I owe much of my professional and personal journey to Janet's wisdom, guidance, trust and ethics. I will miss her greatly and am very grateful for her mentorship over the past few years. My sincerest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who knew her.

I also met Janet at U of W in the co-op residence in 1968. I had forgotten about the towel flicking Mary Anne. We were just full of fun and laughter. What a lovely house of women. Janet and I went on to share several abodes beginning with our apartment on Yonge St. at Rosedale. We were visited by a bat one night when I came home. I woke Janet up and we tried to catch it to no avail. Then we we went down to Penny Tunnel's apartment for help ( another Waterloo housemate) and borrowed her ski mitts. We finally got the creature out. Silly things you remember. We tripped through Europe together along with Jeanine .Her lovely Italian family hosted us in Paese before we went on to Greece to tear down the discos in Crete. Janet returned home to Canada to resume her job at the Addiction Research Foundation. Months later, Jeanine and I returned and after a short stay with Janet at her apartment in Kensington, we found an apartment on St.George. Then our final triumph was to buy a house in Riverdale. I still remember the scorn I received from the bank, when I asked about us three women getting mortgge. We went on to get funding through another financial institute. Janet went back to her scholastic leanings and achieved her Masters in Statistics. She was an inspiration. She got me up in the morning and running the track. I also followed her lead and learned how to SCUBA dive. We were lucky enough to know each others families. Brenda was a sweetheart who called me Alida and Donna and Elaine were never at a loss for a good laugh. A really wonderful family. Janet was such a warm, generous loving friend to me. She will always be in my heart and I miss her deeply. Anita

I was Janet's Pilates teacher for well over a decade and I feel so fortunate to have known this amazing woman. A joy to see every week, Janet's passion for work and life were unbelievably inspiring. Her combination of kindness, humour and intelligence made her extraordinary to be around. We had so many memorable discussions from politics, to the animals and kids in our lives, to her repeated attempts to make me understand her incredible work. She remains an ongoing inspiration to me and I'll miss her deeply.
My heartfelt condolences.

Dear Lynne, Donna, Elaine, and Families:
Please accept my sincere condolences. It is difficult to accept that McDougall Scientific's founder, President, leader, and mentor is no longer a phone call or email away. But she has given me 13 year's of conversations to replay when I need her guidance. She has left us a strong foundation to carry on with her life's work.
I think one of our staff said it best when she wrote:
"Janet instilled in us an ethic that we are committed to not only satisfying customers’ needs, but also honest and rigorous scientific conduct. We challenge our clients to carry out their studies in ways that are more useful, more powerful, and more ethical.”
Included in the many sentiments I have received from clients and colleagues are:
- Janet was such a talented statistician, and an absolutely delightful person.
- Janet was certainly an Icon in this field
- A person of real integrity and professional competency, she made a great contribution to the industry.
- She was an inspiring leader to be sure.
- She shone such a warm bright light on so many.
- She was on amazing woman and I had so much respect for her. She created a wonderful company and within Canada was known as the go to person for statistics in clinical trials. Her bold sense of humor made me laugh.
- A truly inspirational person.
Thank you, Janet. We will miss you.

I was profoundly saddened to hear of Janet's passing, far too soon. I worked with Janet for 10+ years while beginning my career in Clinical Research at Janssen Pharmaceutica, and we kept in touch as colleagues and friends ever since. Janet was a real inspiration to me - such incredible intellect, the highest of ethical standards and integrity, an unwavering sense of social justice, unparalleled generosity (always extending a helping hand), and on top of all of that, a sharp quick wit that never failed to evoke laughter all around her.
Janet will be sorely missed by so many whose lives she lifted up both professionally and personally, including mine.

I met Janet in 2000, parachuted into MSL by a client to work on a project. The project ended, but MSL was able to use me on other projects, which I was always happy to help with, for 17 years!
I appreciated the collaborative atmosphere at the office and the fellowship. A wonderful team with a leader of integrity.
And the Christmas parties were so lovely, which I was able to share with my friend Alison.
Our sincerest condolences, Lynne. We are thinking of you and will remember Janet (and her laugh) fondly.

Very sad to hear of Janet's passing. Condolences to her family and close friends. I worked with Janet and MSL on several clinical trial projects. Janet was always the consummate professional, with a twinkle in her eye as she shared the wonders of statistics! We discussed our common love of canine companions. The world has lost a trailblazer, a keen mind, and a delightful woman who was obviously a mentor to many. RIP Janet.

Dear Lynne, Elaine and Donna and Janet's family my deepest sympathy is extended to you. I am so completely saddened to hear of your loss..our loss. Please accept my condolences and may the many memories of Janet sustain you in the future and soothe your sorrow. I too met Janet at "140". she was the new frosh of the year and she stood out she had such a bright mind and true sense of fun...while totally inclusive of all..she worked a building a team at the house..full of support and many Janet planned adventures and outings..she was a trailblazer..no barrier could resist her. She was the glue that kept us all in touch a friend you could always rely on. Janet became a friend (comrade in crime) of my late husband David...they where forever up to mischief or mischievous plans, as well they shared many common interests.,,photography, 'building', travel, sailing..just plan nonsense and a good party...wine tasting (another story!!). There has never been a question of Janet's commitment and loyalty to her family (including many dogs) and friends. Janet guided us all..she had thoughtful pauses and questions in her interactions that prompted us to have second thoughts which most times lead together wisdom. But mostly there was the laughter and Janet's laugh..your sense of fun.. Janet's vibrance enriched us all, her principles were beacons that guided us to higher standards in life, relationships and work.
Janet pass knowing you touched the lives the housemates you taught, the colleagues you worked with and the friends and family who loved you. I feel so grateful have shared a deep friendship with Janet. To you Lynne I send healing. Love endures.

My deepest condolences to Janet’s family. Like Mary Anne Marshall, I lived in “140” my first two years at the University of Waterloo. Having three brothers, it was quite an experience to live in a house with 25+ girls with 1 telephone. Janet was welcoming, friendly and helpful. Her wit and flicking abilities were greatly admired by me and the other “frosh”. After more than 50 years, I still fondly remember Janet and her wonderful sense of humour. To see how much she accomplished is no surprise, as her leadership skills were more than evident in those early university days. And yes, I remember the cockroach swat!

Janet was an exceptional professional biostatistician who was an enthusiastic strong promoter of sound biostatistics practice. I worked with Janet since the early 90s in association with many applied groups [The Applied Biostatistics Assocation (TABA), Southern Ontario Regional Association (SORA), Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) Biostatistics Section, SSC Accreditation, American Statistical Association (ASA) Accreditation], and we jointly spoke in conference sessions about Accreditation. Janet was an ardent mentor and friend to all who came in contact her. Further, she further put her money where her mouth was, financially supporting many biostatistical functions.
Janet was accredited as a SSC Professional Statistician (P.Stat.) in 2004, the first year of the Canadian program. She had the unique position of having the only organization with (mandated by her) SSC Accreditation of all biostatisticians. Janet became accredited by the ASA when the American program opened. She epitomized an Accredited Biostatistician.
Janet's warmth, wry sense of humour in tough situations, and loud infectious laugh will always be remembered.

Dear Lynne and family,
I am heartbroken upon hearing this sad news. I worked at McDougall Scientific back in the '90s and consider Janet one of the largest influences in my career path. Janet was a tremendous mentor and I learned so much from her during my time at MSL and over the years since, having worked with Janet and her wonderful team many times over. Not only was Janet a mentor in the technical side of the industry, Janet was also a mentor in life skills, with poise, professionalism, a sharp wit, a tremendous sense of fairness and a keen love of animals. Janet showed the young women she encountered that it is possible for women to thrive and aim for success. What a role model! I feel priviledged to have known and worked with Janet and extend my deepest condolences to Lynne and the family. I am better for having known Janet, she will truly be missed.

My deepest condolences to Janet's family, friends and colleagues. She will be certainly missed.
I first met Janet in 2000 while I was at Hemosol as a medical scientist. Janet and her group were doing the statistics in support of our studies. At the time she told me that statisticians are born with a finite number of p values and that you need to use them carefully and thoughtfully. I am so sad to hear that Janet has used her last p value. I worked Janet and her group a number of times over the years. Like in all things, I am sure, she was diligent, careful and trustworthy.

I met Janet in 1968 when I moved into 140 at the student co-op. Over the next three years, her wit, intelligence and laughter brightened my day and made the shared kitchen of the twenty one young women a place to remember. It was never dull when Janet was in the room. I can still see her, mug in hand, flicking a tea towel at the handle of our fridge and having it pop open. The light switch was no match for her prowess either. The laundry never knew why so many flayed tea towels came from 140 as we all got into the act.
I had a few contacts with Janet while she and Anita shared a Kensington apartment. I will always remember her jumping from a prone position with lightening speed to whack a cockroach! When she and Anita moved I became the proud owner of their very red table and mismatched chairs. They now grace my son’s apartment in Montreal after years in our home. I delight in telling Gavin the story of its origin and although I refinished it there remains a hint of red.
I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I will remember her fondly.
