Obituary of Mary Catherine O'Brien
On the morning of Saturday, May 22, our Angel and the Centre of our Universe, Mary Catherine Lee O’Brien, gracefully/peacefully departed the earth. She was surrounded by Mike, her husband of 55 years, and her children, Kathleen, Erin (Greg) and Michael (Alicia). We were gifted with enough time for Michael’s arrival and with the ability to stay by her bedside as a Family, sharing memories, music, and even some lightness/laughter, during her last days in the Sunnybrook ICU. A warm thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunnybrook CRICU.
Mary Catherine joins her son Matthew, and her parents, Gerard and Margaret Lee (nee Healy).
Mary Catherine was a cherished and beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother and Best Friend. Known as “Grammy Yes”, she was endlessly passionate about her six Grandchildren Jack, Madeleine, Kate, Charlotte, Michael and Bridget. Mary Catherine leaves behind her “Sis” Rosemary (Michael), her brother-in-law Rowland (Vivian) and her nieces and nephew Julie (Dan), Christopher (Carla) and Sarah (Alex). She’ll be missed by her sister-in-law Lenore Tropper (Joe), and their children, Eva (Jay) and Marc (Katharina). She leaves behind her devoted Grand dogs Summer, Gabby, Arthur, Whiskey, and reunites with Sammy and Charlie.
A timeless, vivacious, warm, thoughtful, gentle and loving soul, Mary Catherine was always full of laughter, was down-to-earth, and had an extraordinary capacity to listen and to make others feel special and loved. In addition to her Family, Mary Catherine (B.A., B.S.W.) was dedicated to her career as a Social Worker at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. She was an avid golfer and Bridge player who tirelessly perfected her game. A voracious reader, Mary Catherine was intelligent, philosophical, curious and reflective about life. We already miss Mary Catherine’s beautiful, glowing and joyous presence. She left behind a proud legacy for her family, friends, and all who adored her.
Due to Covid restrictions we will be having a small funeral service with family only at Mount Hope Cemetery in Toronto. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Matthew O'Brien scholarship fund at the Catholic Children's Aid Foundation would be appreciated. Click here https://www.ccafdn.ca/
