I happened upon Shirley's obituary in the Toronto Star, and when I saw that she was originally from Saskatoon, I realized that she was friends with my mother Hope Merriman (my father John Merriman was a medical doctor in Saskatoon as well). I recall that Shirley and my mother went on a trip to England together (around 1969 or 1970?), inspired by their mutual love of cathedrals. It was a daring thing at the time for two women to go on a trip on their own, and it was an adventure that my mother never forgot.
My mother was a solitary person, but she valued her friendship with Shirley. I extend my condolences to Shirley's family at the time of this great loss.

I was so sad to read Shirley's obituary. I met Shirley and Frank in KSA when I was setting up a maternal child health education program and we became fast friends as only expats living in that part of the world in the late '70's and early 80's could. Carolyn, if you would send me your address (winpat@telus.net) I have a letter your Mum wrote me and a photo you might like to have. Your Mum's death will have left a huge hole in your heart. With all best wishes, Wendy

What can I say about our beloved friend, Shirley? She will be forever missed, and loved. One of the most wonderful people I have ever known. She and my mum had become great friends. I'll never forget, on the day my mum passed away, Shirley dropped everything to come to be by her side, and to comfort us. She started up a Saturday morning brunch group, and kept it going, even after she retired. It was something my mum and I unfailingly attended!
Shirley also officiated at my sister's wedding. As a minister, Shirley was without equal. It was very apparent, how much she cared for others. It was because of Shirley, that I started attending church again, after many years. So Shirley, dear friend to us all, I want to wish you, the Greek expression, Kalo Paradiso, for a wonderful time in heaven!
Much love from all of us,
- Alexander Seretis
