Obituary of Sandra Benson Carter
Sandra died peacefully on May 5th after a short battle with brain cancer. She was the Benson’s only child, growing up in Duluth before moving to Minneapolis to complete her education.
Sandra led a full and vibrant life. She was a trained medical technologist who excelled in her field. She graduated in Medical Laboratory Sciences and completed her Master’s Degree in immunohematology. Sandy went on to serve as a professor of immunohematology at the University of Minnesota. She was a prominent member of the Association of the American Medical Technologists, having helped to develop the first multiple choice examination students had to pass in order to become certified.
In 1969, Sandy married her soulmate, Richard Carter. When Richard accepted the job of Ticketing Manager at Roy Thompson Hall in 1985, they moved to Toronto. In those days’ accreditation was not reciprocal so Sandy spent her first year in Canada volunteering with Meals on Wheels. Eventually The Michener Institute hired her to work in their communications department where she helped to develop training materials. She remained at The Michener until she retired.
Along the way, Richard and Sandy joined The Act Two drama group. A group for seniors 50 plus who work to increase awareness and challenge stereotypes of aging. Sandy was part of their first touring production Handle With Care, giving back to the medical community well into her retirement. She and Richard made many life-long friends in Canada who will mourn Sandy and remember her fondly, having known her as a true friend; one who made their lives richer.
