Obituary of Barbara Lucille Thompson

Barbara Lucille Thompson (neé. Dunford)

December 22,1926 – March 30,2021

Passed at Michael Garron Hospital after a lengthy journey with Alzheimer’s. Barbara is survived by her loving husband Arthur, son Rod (Eva), grandchildren Eric, Adam (Jen), Tiffany (Marc) and great-grandchildren, Aiden, Ethan, Jaxon, Jessica, Alexander, Austin and Aria as well as her caring brother, Merv. Barbara was pre-deceased by her parents William Charles and Dorothy and her sisters Dorothy and Peggy.

Born in Toronto, Barb attended Northern Collegiate and subsequently pursued her career as a legal secretary at Fleming, Smoke and Mulholland. Barb retained and was immensely proud of her speedy typing and shorthand skills. Throughout her life she remained in close contact with a group of friends from her high school days. Barb will be fondly remembered as a caring, kind-hearted and generous person dedicated to her family, neighbors, friends and many others throughout her life.

Barb was an enthusiastic swimmer and enjoyed swimming at her sisters’ cottages on Georgian Bay as well as at the Leaside Community Pool. She was an avid gardener, sewer, knitter and decorator especially in her favorite color of turquoise.

Barbara met Arthur as a British airman when he visited Toronto during training in Canada. After the war they enjoyed 73 years of a dedicated marriage. They had many travels together the highlight of which was attending the 50th anniversary celebration of the RAF Pathfinder Force in England. For this special occasion they travelled to England on the Queen Elizabeth and returned to Canada on a memorable flight on the Concorde.

Sincere thanks are given to Elizabeth Gordon, a dedicated support provider from VHA, who attended to Barbara’s care through many of her final years. Appreciation is also given to the support staff at Leaside Revera Retirement Home who worked tirelessly to support Barbara’s needs especially through the past challenging year. Final appreciation is given to the skilled, caring and supportive staff at Michael Garron Hospital who made her comfortable over her final days.

Cremation has already taken place and a private immediate family memorial service will be held at a future date.
