Obituary of Helmut Kern

Helmut Kern

May 25, 1947 – February 3, 2021

Helmut was born and grew up in a small town, Nieder-Beerbach, near Frankfurt in Germany.  When he finished school, he came to Canada and worked in Winnipeg for a few years before moving to Toronto.  He became a Christian as a young adult and found his way to Knox Church where he met the person he would eventually marry after enjoying a relationship that spanned more than 30 years. Helmut and Martha were married in June, 2019. Over the years, they travelled to several far-off places including Australia, Turkey and Singapore. Almost 10 years ago, Helmut became re-acquainted with his brother, Reiner, in Germany and each summer since then, Helmut and Martha enjoyed travelling to Germany to spend time with Reiner and his wife, Petra, and daughter, Lena.  Helmut had several friends from school who still live in Nieder-Beerbach and each summer, there would be a group of 12 or more people that would gather for dinner, often at Burg Frankenstein (Frankenstein Castle – there really is such a place!).

Helmut died at home, unexpectedly, on the morning of February 3rd.  A private funeral was held at Knox Church, Toronto, on February 9th, followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  He will be greatly missed by his wife, Martha, his family and friends in Germany, friends in Canada and the Knox community.  If desired, donations can be made to the Salvation Army (salvationarmy.ca).
