Obituary of Elsie Lillian Boyd

Elsie passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 5, 2021.  She was born November 28, 1929 in Walkerville, Ontario, the only child of Thomas and Ruth Boyd. As a youngster, Elsie returned to the UK with her family where she spent her formative years.  During WWII she was evacuated from London and spent time sheltering with families in East Sussex.  At 23, she enlisted to the Women’s Royal Army Corps where she worked as a clerk, stationed in Egypt. By the time Elsie had completed her service in December, 1955 she was ranked as a Corporal.

She then began working for the Shell Oil Company at the Head Office in London, UK.  In 1960, she moved back to Canada and was recruited by Shell Oil Canada in Toronto.  In 1984, Shell relocated their head office to Calgary and Elsie helped with the transition before taking early retirement. She loved to joke that she had been retired for longer than she worked.

She embraced her new freedom and hobbies including miniature woodworking at Taylor Place (now the Better Living Centre) and was an active member of the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club.  She loved reading and solving jigsaw and crossword puzzles when she wasn’t travelling with friends. She was always ready to enjoy a meal and a nice drink.

As a fiercely independent career woman, Elsie was ahead of her time in many ways. She was a witty, intelligent and curious person who was always into the latest technological gadgets; her biggest fear was missing out on new innovations that will come after her passing.

She was a special Aunt to Jason, Brett and Vanessa and enjoyed watching them and their kids grow up.  She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Cheers Elsie.
