Mark and Winnie, our hearts are aching for you both over the loss of Matthew. In his short 26 years he had managed to experience and contribute so much, we all are poorer for being robbed of what else he certainly would have achieved. It is not lost on us that today as we write this it is family day and can only imaging the pain and hurt you and your extended family must be feeling. Know that you both are in our thoughts and if we can do anything to help you at all please let us know.
With deep sympathy

To Winnie and Mark.
Our most sincere condolences to you on the recent passing of Matthew. We were all so shocked when we heard, and remember Matthew fondly from the very early play dates and throughout the UCC times together. How much Matthew achieved at such a high level and in so few years, allows us to appreciate how much has been lost with his early passing. An amazing talent and a career path ahead that would have benefited so many, together with being such a genuinely nice guy; all lost far too soon. Our thoughts are with you at this time, and hope that the precious memories you have of Matthew will support you and bring you both some peace.

Mark and Winnie,
Martha and I just want to express our deepest sympathy to you. As we knew Matthew from his earliest days at UCC the news to us was both shocking and personal. Matthew played at our house quite a bit as a youngster. We felt we knew him pretty well and always enjoyed his enthusiasm and gregariousness. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you both over these past few days and we hope you find the strength to cope with such a tragic loss.
Sincerely,
Martha & Greg

The Angels blessed Matthew with astonishing gifts: extraordinary intellect, focus and passion; a joyful, warm, humorous and self-effacing personality; and wonderful teachers and mentors. But the greatest gift he received was his parents, Winnie and Mark, whom he adored, who surrounded him with love and encouraged, cultivated and nurtured him at every turn. We stand with them mourning the loss - far too soon - of this great soul.
Ave atque Vale, Matthew.
All our love, Wendy, Alex, Andrew and Angus.

Marni, Mark, Kimberley, Stephanie and Andrew remember this young man of brilliance and achievement, unsurpassed appetite for learning, and remarkable intellect: an individual whom in his too short life generated material change and advancement of our collective knowledge, to our benefit. A chance meeting in Firenze brought a moment of laughter and togetherness of our families that will resonate forever, as will the indelible renown of Matthew in reflection of his and his amazing parents’ indelible spirit. God Bless.

I was so saddened to learn about Matthew. As his teacher and advisor at Upper Canada College he impressed me (and everybody) with his ability and passion for math and computer science. My favourite memory, however, was helping Matt and his young friends start a role playing miniatures club in grade 9. Watching those kids simply enjoy each others company and play was a pleasure and still makes me smile. The world is a poorer place. Mark Hoel
