Dr Krafchik treated 2 of my sons in her Sick Kids clinic in the 90’s. She was kind and caring and my kids really liked her. Her treatment of my teenage son helped him immensely with a terrible case of cystic acne. Dr Krafchik said to me “I don’t want him to endure a scarred face”. I am so grateful to Dr Krafchik. She truly was a wonderful paediatric dermatologis.

Found this photo of me and Dr. Krafchik. It was thanks for her that over 30 years ago, I was able to know and plan for my incredibly rare genetic skin condition.
She was an absolutely incredible doctor and I have fond memories of going to sick kids to visit her.
She will always be remembered and missed.

We were very disappointed that we were unable to be part of the Zoom celebration of Bernice's life. We do know from others there were many very warm sentiments expressed about Bernice's humanity, skills and delight in sharing in the lives, careers, and families of others.
We would dearly like to add our condolences to those of the many others who like us look back with fondness on the times we shared with Bernice.
Hayley, Adam, Vanessa and Gillian we share your loss and being in sight of your old family home on a daily basis we cannot fail to think of Bernice often.
Hugs

I remember the first time I met Bernice. I was referred to her in the early to mid 1970's. She came into the waiting room and announced Mary Vachon, then she paused and said Mary L.S. Vachon. I was a bit offended and we spoke about it. Ever after I was Mary L.S. to her. She was obviously an outstanding physician and wonderful person.
She referred clients to me, took a great interest in me and my family, walked over to bring First Nations moccasins when my daughter was born and invited my son to speak at Branksome about his life experiences. She was truly a force of nature and the world will be somewhat diminished without her presence.
We last met for lunch about 1 1/2 years ago and caught up and reflected on our relationship over the years.I will miss knowing that she is around. I extend my very deepest sympathies to her children, in-laws and grandchildren. You were all unique and special to her.
Warm Regards,
Mary L.S. Vachon,

To Dr. Krafchik’s family....your Mom was truly one of a kind. My daughter was referred to her when she was just 3 years old & was her patient well into her teens. What a lovely, kind lady! She always had time to explain the rare condition that this little child had been diagnosed with, but also always cared about the rest of the family. We were blessed to have met her & considered her a friend. May she rest in peace. Our sincerest condolences to you

Bernice AvRushkin was a long-time subscriber to the chamber music series Music TORONTO. I remember her as a warm and friendly presence, someone who cared about music and often thanked me for the artists we presented. I missed her gracious presence when we had to stop producing in the pandemic. A long and valued life; she will be much missed. Jennifer Taylor, Artistic Producer, Music TORONTO

We remember the good times we had together with Bernice and Stan, the stories our girls told of their interactions with the AvRuskin kids and the kind consultations with Bernice professionally. When I had an appointment with a dermatologist last Friday I asked her if she knew Dr. Krafchik. She replied, "She's a legend." Amen.

I remember Bernice's from my days growing up on Nanton Avenue. In particular I remember her smile which, for me, communicated warmth and playfulness. One day as a teenager I was skate boarding on the street as she was walking along. I stopped to say hello. Even at 16 I was a head taller then so when she approached she was at the perfect height to notice a birthmark on my neck. She got all excited and explained to me that some dermatologists thought that my type of birthmark was a remnant of a gill slit, humans having evolved from the sea she explained. I still don't know if this is true. She could have been messing with me. I've told this story each time someone notices my birthmark and each time I tell it I remember her for the fun loving, welcoming and warm woman she was to me.
Sending hugs and love to you all,
Gordon Potts

I just heard about Bernice's passing and wish to offer my sincerest condolences to her family. I met and got to know Bernice during her residency years in dermatology and have continued to respect and admire her to this day. . She had a distinct style of direct and honest assessment of people and conditions, all with sensitivity and compassion, but without judgement . Beyond her talents as a physician and teacher, were the character traits that made her such a unique and warm individual. She had strong definitive opinions and could defend them with intelligence and kindness to those who might disagree. Most importantly, she had a huge generous heart that took in and embraced people of all shapes and sizes and opinions. She became a major force in pediatric dermatology, both locally and internationally. I will remember her mostly for how she shared so much of her personal time and energy with so many people. I was fortunate to be one of those people. The world has lost a delightful and very special person.

Dear Hayley, Adam, Vanessa and Gillian,
I was so sorry to hear that your Mom had died. As I told her many times, I loved her and considered her part of my family. I can still hear her voice as she recalled meeting me, age 11, when I had first moved onto Nanton and introduced myself, offering my babysitting services. " I am 11 and very responsible". Amazingly, your Mom and Dad hired me and I babysat you all, only slightly younger than me - ages 9, 7, 5 and 3!
Your Mom was there for many of the big milestones in my life; Bat Mitzvah, wedding (1988), when my parents died (2004 & 2010), and finally when my husband, Bruce, died suddenly 6 years ago. My kids still remember her bringing samosas to our Shiva.
I always knew I could count on her friendship and most of all her honesty. Thinking of you all, and sending lots of love.
XO Susie Whaley (nee Kash)

I met Dr. K as a paediatric resident at SickKids in the 90’s. She taught me many things beyond skin rashes. I learned how to be curious, humble and not take myself so seriously. Like many ‘students’ she became a lifelong friend; we went out for dinner, celebrated events and retirements, and I was thrilled when she accepted rounds invitations to come to St Joe’s to share her derm passion and impart her wisdom and wit. She really was larger than life (and stature). Her life story is ‘remarkable’. Her accolades and contributions echo all over the globe. Her legacy will outlast the test of time. Like the many children and families whose lives she transformed, I feel so lucky to have known her in my lifetime, and so proud to call her my friend. Dr K, I will miss you. My deepest condolences to the AvRuskin family especially Hayley who has been so supportive in my daughter’s life. Rest in peace Queen K.

Dear Hayley/Phil, Vanessa/James, Gillian/Giorgi, Adam/Anne & all the Grandkids- We are so sorry for your loss, and send our deepest condolences. Bernice was the "Queen" of Pediatric Dermatology, yes, but her kids were her greatest pride and joy.
Len & I are crying for this loss. We are so deep in gratitude for knowing Bernice so well. What a giving soul!
We remember so many great times, too numerous to count. We have known Bernice & the family since 1995, when jan became her first Fellow at HSC. Bernice would talk every day about her kids- all of you were loved so deeply. We know things that only great friends and close family would know. Bernice and Stan would stay in our home. We visited Bernice, sometimes in Maine, as she came so many years. We visited her often in Toronto, nearly yearly, staying with Bernice AND Stan the Man, and then just Bernice in later years. We have had escapades with you, kids, on her behalf- e.g., breaking into her home to extract pictures for her 65th year HSC birthday celebration (Elena Pope, Patsy Lenane- co-conspirators). We laughed so hard, and had so much fun- all done without her knowledge, which was a feat (as we know, Bernice knows "everything")!
We will never forget helping her move to Avenue Rd, and how glad we were to help her. She trusted us, which was a great gift. She had her own mind, as we all know; and, Len & I would rise to the challenge of corralling her to do something for which she marched to her own drum.
What a woman, Mother, Grandmother, and legend! What a wonderful family. Thank you for sharing time with us.
Lurve,
-jan (Pelletier) & Len (Kass), Maine

I first met Bernice through my friend John, and later, Mandy Cole, and from the beginning she was a force to be reckoned with. She loved her family with all her heart and was immensely proud of her kids and the chaos they provided in her daily life. Bernice was always running late, mostly because she attended closely to whoever was in front of her and what they were saying. She had a huge heart and a generous soul and readily provided advice to all. It was Bernice who convinced us that making gravlax was easy and afterward confessed she'd gotten the fish monger to do the slicing. After trying to convince us not to get married, Bernice freely offered us her house on Dale Road in which to hold the event. That happened on the weekend that Stan turned 50 and the family was celebrating elsewhere. And as a wedding gift, she gave us a lovely blue fish platter made by the same artist who made her bathroom sink. We use it often, and remember Bernice each time. She leaves beautiful footprints on our hearts.

Fourteen years we traveled several times a year from Strathroy to Toronto. Dr. Krafchik became part of our family. We heard stories of South Africa, food and her family. She was always concerned we traveled so far. The last visit was at a restaurant. She picked us up and drove us, which was somewhat terrifying, lol
Our lives are forever better because of her. She will be so missed. Love from Rick, Lynn, Mary-Lyn and especially Julie-Ann Denning . Our condolences to family and friends.

Many people will write about Dr. K as a doctor, teacher, lecturer, clinician, and mentor. And yes she was all of that, and what and amazing doctor, teacher, lecturer, clinician, and mentor she was to me, and to so many others. But my fondest memories of Bernice were centred around our shared love for food. Yes, she introduced me to the world of paediatric dermatology, but she also introduced me to Hua Sang Lobster. She taught me clinical pearls but she also taught me how to make marinated goat cheese. Yes, she shared her wisdom but also shared dim sum meals with me and my family. She handed down knowledge, but I was also the recipient of many a cookbook from her.
Bernice, you will be missed by so many. But the proof of a well-lived life is to have changed so many. You have changed us all. For that we will always be grateful. May we all do you proud.
-Perla
