I consider myself lucky, that I got to spend some time with Tomiko back in 2016 when I had just started my job at the International House Program in Jacksonville State University. She was generous with her time and helped me gain an important insight into the impact IH program had on so many lives including herself. She was kind and shared her courageous experience as international student in late 50's when she took this long journey from Japan to Alabama and how she survived being away from her family when there was no easy way to connect with them and talk to them. Listening to her, gave me a sense of confidence that I was needing at the time.
In a short time we got to know each other, I will forever be indebted to the love and support Tomiko showered on me.
Jeffrey means a lot to us and we are heartbroken for his loss. Our love and thoughts are with him and the family.

I was both deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of Tomiko’s passing. I had the great pleasure of getting to know Tomiko over many years at countless arts events in Jeffrey’s company. I always gravitated to her at social gatherings and enjoyed tremendously the discussions we had at various occasions. She was always cheerful, elegant and fun and a delight to be with. Her quiet and understated presence and sparkle will be missed by so many people who enjoyed spending time with her. My sincere condolences to Jeffrey, Peter and the entire family. My thoughts are with you at this very difficult time.

I had the pleasure of working with Tomiko at the Toronto Reference Library where she worked part-time. Her obituary photo shows her beauty and the serenity of her personality. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and of the battle she had at the end of her life.
My condolences to Jeffrey and Peter and family in their grief. Peace be with you. Kathryn Chirametli

I was very sorry to hear, just recently of Tomiko's illness, and her passing.
I had the good fortune to play tennis with Tomiko over many years. She was a strong competitor but once the game was over, the score forgotten, we shared many great conversations over coffee.
She was so proud of her family, especially those three lively grandsons.
My condolences to all of you.

Dearest Smyth family,
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Tomiko's passing. She was such a gracious, generous, and intelligent woman, beautiful inside and out. There are so many memories, and we were blessed that the long and deep friendship with our parents, Erika and Paul, was carried on even when they were no longer with us. My earliest memories of Tomiko are from my childhood, and I was always in awe of her gentleness, dignity and elegance. Peter and I were reminiscing about the beautiful dinner she made for us back in 2012, the lively conversation, and the attention to detail (including a beautifully-set separate table for my then little kids). We loved the fact that Tomiko and Jeffrey visited us once in Manchester, very moved that they made this stop on one of their many exciting trips. Receiving the annual Christmas letter from the Smyth family has always been a highlight of the holiday period, and I can only imagine how much you will feel Tomiko's absence from your active and vibrant lives.
We were blessed to have known Tomiko, and we join the many who will miss and remember her fondly.
Please accept our deep sympathy,
Julie Gottlieb, Peter Gottlieb and Julian Jacobs and family

We have very fond memories of Tomiko - such a gentle woman, so incredibly kind and how proudly she always spoke of her son and his family. We shall cherish the memories of our last lunch together, which we remember like it was yesterday. Sending our love and condolences to Jeffrey, Peter, Lin, the boys, and to her siblings. May she rest in peace.

Our heartfelt condolences to you Jeffrey and Peter and of course extended family. I think we are probably one of the few neighbors who have enjoyed this community for almost as long as you have Jeffrey. We have seen our children grow up together -- and I dare say, we have grown old together. We feel privileged to have known Tamiko through it all -- ever gracious and beautiful, she will be sadly missed by the Paradi family. Please know we are here for you.
