To the family of Aivars Petersons,
I only heard earlier today of Aivars’ untimely passing. I knew Aivars as a fellow member of Leaside Tennis Club. Aivars was a frequent participant in our doubles House League and other activities at the club, and it was my good fortune to play with and against him on numerous occasions. Aivars was a convivial partner and a gracious opponent. If paired with Aivars, victory was a likely outcome. If he was on the other side of the net, you had the comfort of knowing that the game would be well played, even if the points usually went the other way. Either way, the game would be entertaining. Post-game conversations would often start with tennis but usually venture somewhere else, and a thoughtful approach to issues and questions was always evident.
For those of us who only knew Aivars casually through tennis, the news of his passing is distressing; it is impossible to imagine the impact on his family and close friends. I will keep you in my prayers.

Nancy, my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Thinking of you and remembering all the great travel stories you shared with us. Your bike trips in Europe. Most couples would bring 2+ suitcases for these trips and you and Aivars would travel with just your carry ons! And your ski trips. Skiing all day and then sharing delicious apres ski meals with your friends. A life well lived. And your travel stories were proof of that.

Deepest Sympathy Nancy, at this tragic loss. Aivars was a caring, considerate friend, I always enjoyed our annual Waterloo reunion dinners and hearing about the trips and fun you and Aivars shared. I was looking forward to the next one and hearing about John's wedding. So happy you were able to enjoy that together last summer.

We were shocked and deeply saddened when we learned the news about Aivars. Even though we haven’t seen much of you in the past few years, all of the good times we spent together in the ‘80s seem like just yesterday. It’s hard to believe that Aivars is gone. Nancy, our hearts go out to you. Hold up the best you can.

I can scarcely believe he's gone... Together with Nancy and John, we spent countless hours together at hockey rinks, on buses to tournaments, or just sharing a coffee and a lively conversation. On out hockey team, "The Spirited", he was known as the gentle half of the "Twin Towers" on defense. Nancy and John, I cannot imagine your loss, but Aivar's spirit and warm smile will live on in all of us who knew him and who had the great fortune of knowing the truly wonderful man.
Judy, Matthew, Christopher and I send our deepest, sincerest condolences. May you all be at Peace.
Sincerely,
Jim Porteous
