Sending love and support to the Weir branch of my family tree.
I have very special memories of so manyThanksgiving gatherings with Auntie Fran . Always she went of her way to create a beauitiful party that was going to have great food and lots of fun ! Big gatherings that were at the farm and at Glen Edyth. She created a very warm and welcoming atmosphere for us all to celebrate ! [ She did continually, every year, find it abit odd , that I was vegetarian and would Not ! be eating any turkey.]
As I became more interested in flower arranging and became a florist profesisonally ,she took interest and encouraged me.
We will all miss the uniqueness and warmth of Auntie Fran .
I hope that time will heal the sadness of her loss and help us all to focus on 'Living life to the fullest '. Auntie Fran was certainly a role model of that attitude .
with caring Aleya Gibson

I have many fond memories with Aunty Fran and fun warm loving family. Often my Delicious lunch in her sunny kitchen with frog wallpaper. Strolling in fields at the farm. And Uncle John teaching me to dive in the lake there. Aunty Fran always had a warm smile and sparkle in her eyes. We will all miss her very much.

Condolences to all the Weir family for your great loss.

Fran Weir was the queen bee of the Weir hive. In fact she really was an experienced bee keeper .
Auntie Fran was my favourite aunt { also my only aunt.]
In reflecting during these sad past days on her huge influence on me . I still keep keep coming back with sweet sentimentality to the extraordinarily fun childhood times at the Weir's country home; the farm at Primrose .
Fran created such a warm comfortable welcome for us all ! As a hostess with the mostess !
A stunningly beautiful farm house home full of interesting Canadian antiques and great art. Great family dinners all around the long pine table with plenty of laughter, [ but not much political content.] All with fabulous gourmet food created by Fran . She did not believe in cooking shortcuts . Choosing instead to do each step carefully, with long recipes and doing it right ! Fran was quite the perfectionist in fact.
Mandatory! --during those childhood country weekends for 6 bouncy kids , walks in the woods. Forced botany and horticultural learning;-- the names of plants , berries, birds, flowers, trees and mushrooms. That non -optional educational gift , has now grown into my life long passion and respect for nature ,Thank you deeply ! Auntie Fran .
Generously and frequently at the farm ,Auntie Fran kindly encouraged yet another of my special events or even better, one of my many small plays or musicals featuring all the kids. Her designer bedspreads were even loaned to be part of the stage set.
Creatively over her lifetime Fran expressed her many talents with, original wreaths , flower arrangements, watercolours or whimsical headdresses or costumes .One of her best costumes was 'Charlie Chaplin' for Women's art annual garden party . She even manged to stay silent and stay in character !
As a mature person I understand now the huge challenges that Fran took on with my Mom Mary. At the Toronto garden show their creation of walk thru visual garden displays , creating a corner of wildflowers' in the Ontario woods ' . All done indoors ! Working gentely with tempermental transplanted woodland plants that had to be babied and tricked into bloom within strict deadlines . Such a challenge ! I still chuckle fondly, remembering the two unpaid manual workers that were drafted! .
Our two dads unwillingly yes , but very involved with this delicate gardening project, bossed around by Fran . Eventually finished somehow ? Looking like Mother Nature had been in charge and done it all !
Fran loved a good party , and clearly now she has reunited in an intimate heavenly gathering . Dear Aunty Fran. was late yet again as always! -- in joining the waiting Mary ,John and Bud in drinking cocktails and laughing !

I was saddened to see that Fran had died. I looked after the garden at her house for a time. My experience with her was brief but delightful.
She was confined to the house at that time. I always looked to the back window when I was there, hoping to see her there surveying the garden.
I will miss her.

I could never miss an opportunity to give a shout out to Fran and sister Mary! They both played a great role in our 7+ years in Toronto with Mary directly across from our house. There has never been such a beautiful and trusted relationship between two sisters as theirs. And the fun they had was endless. What one couldn’t dream up, the other could! I remember how awe struck I was when your parents were in Western Canada, I assume near Whistler, jumping out of helicopters and skiing down through powder deeper than them. I was also a lucky visitor to John and Fran’s farm on several occasions which was amazing! And I would never have experienced the ROM as a docent without their guidance!
Her love for you children was endless and know you treasure your parent’s presence in your lives. A LIFE WELL LIVED, FRAN! Enviable

I was Fran's favorite (and only) nephew, and so coincidentely she was my favorite aunt.Aunt Fran did what aunts do. Always encouraging and responsive enjoying the luxury of a perspective outside the confines of my immediate family.
Although Fran led a somewhat charmed life she had an internal strength and an old world stoicism that kept her going through dark times, most particularly the war years. She plays a significant role in Blake Heathcote's biographical saga "The Survivor:Scruffy's War".
On Fran's last visit to my somewhat rustic accommodations in the country I relished her impassioned debate with my mom considering the merits of our outhouse compared with the new indoor toilet.
Christmas gift giving traditions tapered off in recent years but I was always struck by the thoughtful (and useful)things I received from her.A gourmet cook, one bit of wisdom I retain . "Cook your eggs slowly"

Condolences to John, Suze, Ian and your families on the passing of your Mum.
You may remember that the Glens and the Weirs crossed paths several times over the years - sometimes serendipitously - the very definition of “small world”.
It started post-war in Owen Sound when my parents - UK transplants Colin and Barbara shared a house with Fran and John. They lived upstairs/downstairs, partied together, raised young together. Fran and John became my God parents.
When Fran and John moved away, the Glen/Weir contacts were less but John and Fran’s attendance at special events such as my parents’ milestone birthdays or wedding anniversaries was always marked with great fun, shenanigans and of course, costumes.
Fast forward to the mid-2000’s - my wife Suzanne and I were offloading our son Geoff’s stuff in Halifax as he was about to start at Dalhousie. In chatting with a couple also decamping their son’s belongings in the drive of the house, we discovered that the parents - who we did not know at the time - were Fran’s son John and his wife Debra! History was repeating itself as the Weirs and Glens were again upstairs/downstairs. Small world indeed.
Suzanne and I enjoyed visiting Fran at Glen Edyth on several occasions in recent years. We were grateful to reconnect and share some of the old stories. We will remember her fondly.

Dear John, Suze and Ian. A life well lived and remaining in her own home which was her wish. Beautiful tribute to your Fran. Don and I had the good fortune to be seated with your mom and dad at JS and Candice's wedding in Kelowna in September of 2006. Lively discussion and great fun at that table! I am sure the party will continue upstairs.
