Obituary of Gretta Wechsler
Gretta Wechsler (nee Flanagan) died peacefully at home on Wednesday July 22, 2020 in her 89th year. Born in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire, England, Gretta immigrated to Toronto shortly after the war where she married George Wechsler (1921-1995) and raised her family. She is survived by her children Charles (Laurie) and Alan (Teresa) and granddaughter Jacqueline.
Gretta was an eternal optimist possessing an amazing love for life and a generous spirit. She readily volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels, knit hats for newborns, and was a cat sitter for many.
Very social and quick to laugh, Gretta was always surrounded by caring friends. Her kindness and graciousness made people warm to her immediately. She often hosted elaborate holiday get-togethers and was the chief instigator when a road trip was in order.
Gretta loved to travel and explored almost every quadrant of the globe. Her home was filled with artifacts and mementos from around the world. But her greatest love was her family, and she will be forever missed.
Special thanks to the Revera staff at Donway Place for their kindness and support, and to Dr. Tamar Sudai for her care and compassion over so many years.
Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held at Humphrey Funeral Home on Wednesday July 29th. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation to the Toronto Humane Society or United Way. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
