Dear Sandra and family,
It was with sadness that we learned of Dennis' passing. In reading Dennis' obituary, it shows us a shining example of his dedication to so many community involvements and sports. I imagine that his chosen career would be considered by many to be a handful, and then to read how giving he was of his time and energy to outside interests, is truly admirable. We're sure that his strength and convictions came from Sandra and his 3 boys!
We have an Irish family connection to Sandra, and Dennis married into our "clan". He was completely unassuming and a good listener, mild mannered, and always gave wise counsel when asked. He had great respect for my Mom and visa versa, and for that I'm truly grateful. I always loved Dennis' stories, well paced and told with compassion.
Sandra, we wish you and your family many fond memories, from which to gain comfort.
Gentle hugs,
Judy and Roy (Fricker)

Hi Aunt Sandra. I am sorry to have learned from you today a month after Uncle Dennis passed that he has passed into the arms of the lord. He was the best godfather anyone could ever have. He was always so kind and caring to me and always had a positive happy smile and demeanour when we met. I loved all his engaging stories and I am sure his best friend my dad Jim Davis and him are engaging in their favourite football game in heaven. He was such a big part of our family and my dad and him both best man at each other’s wedding. He was the master of ceremonies at my wedding too. And when he spoke at my dads funeral the chandelier flickered above as if my dad was present the whole time. I will cherish and remember all our fond memories together and his 80th Bday celebration. And especially our last visit at Christie Gardens last November on my trip back to Toronto from Vancouver. I can remember his glowing face as we talked and felt his spirit was still alive and joyful. A humble kind hearted man. Stoic and poised. He meant everything to me. And guided my divorce after 33 years with my doctor husband Howard Verrico. He was such an honourable man in every way. A shining light in his profession and to his family. I will never forget my cherished times with him and forever keep a special and sacred place in my heart for him. Take care and much love. I was very saddened to read of Dennis’s passing. I saw Andy’s Facebook post that the family is together at Dennis’s happy place ... the cottage. I am imagining you all there, together. I don’t know if the cottage has changed but I have so many memories that include your family, with Dennis (Mr Lane!) at the heart of it all. Easy chats, A warm smile, a passing hug, deep conversations all in a day. A gentle giant Mr Lane was to me - a second father figure for several years. So having lost my own dad almost 24 years ago, somehow losing him hit that much harder. Sending love to you all - such a wonderful thoughtful and caring family - that is the best tribute you could give him. Love, Janet

It is with sadness that I heard of the passing of my partner and friend of so many years at Osler and subsequently as a mediator / arbitrator at ADR . We split seats at the Blue Jays games with Jim Doran and Brad Paulin and as , I now find out ,both won the Clara Brett Martin award at Osgoode ( I think it was for estate planning of all things !) --A real lawyer's lawyer and always a gentleman --we shall miss him --

We are devastated by the loss of Uncle Den. I feel honoured to have been able to attend the service. He always made myself and my family feel welcome.
I have special memories of Uncle Dennis driving the motor boat and being very patient with me as I tried numerous times to get up on water-skis. There was a really fun event when Uncle Den and Aunt Sandra took myself to Cirque du Soleil at Ontario Place for my birthday when I was young, and numerous years of family time up at the cottage having fun in the sun, and making special memories.
My children, Jessica and Nicole, are very fond of Uncle Dennis. He will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts xoxo
Love Christine (his only and favorite niece) & Paul Taylor

Mr. Lane, as I recall, was lead legal professional on the team of 5 who were in charge of the case on which I first worked, when I joined the firm of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt ("Osler"), in November of 1974.
As well, together with my dear late sisters, I too attended Armour Heights Presbyterian for some time.
There, I would happily run into Mr. Lane and his wife Sandra. His ever present warm smile and, bright eyes shining through his glasses, always lifted my spirit. To me, he was family, as we all are at Osler.
As I learned of his passing from a firm colleague last evening who, at first, could recall only his last name, my heart sank at the thought of having lost one of the brightest lights I have encountered at the firm.
Everyone at the office has a very special place in my heart; but, retired partners are my favourites. Mr. Lane was special among them, because of who he was to me, due to his connection to the time when I began at the firm.
I will greatly miss knowing that Mr. Lane is still out there in our world carrying on as he was, serving from the bench and, enjoying his family and grandchildren for a few more years to come.
My very deepest condolences to his loving wife Sandra, children and grandchildren, as well as his numerous friends and, associates.
God grant you all his courage, strength and, peace.
May the wealth of memories you have of him make you smile, once you are beyond this time of unspeakable grief; and, may you find those memories to be a healing blessing as mine of him will certainly always be, for many more years to come!
Warm Embrace From My Heart To Yours,
Ms Casilda Joseph (Osler)

Dennis was a senior partner when I joined Osler Hoskin out of school. He was giving of his time and mentorship. He shared his experience, his skills, and his advice freely with junior colleagues. Moreover, he was unfailingly a gentleman who always carried himself with civility and grace. He was greatly admired. Please accept Rhonda's and my sincere condolences to your whole family.

I first met Dennis in the mid 1960's, introduced to him by a co-worker who knew Dennis from the Toronto Scottish rugby team. The team decided it needed a winter sport to keep in shape during the annual hiatus after summer rugby season. In the Fall of 1967, my co-worker asked if a weekly hockey game could be arranged.
I think Dennis was the only one of the rugby players who had ever been on skates before, but all joined in for the fun and exercise. Dennis continued playing hockey with us for the next 20+ years.
Dennis would be proud to know that the weekly game ranks as another of his community service accomplishments as it continues to this day.
Sandra, we offer our sincere condolences to you and your sons.

Diana and Roy Schatz wish to express our sincere condolences to Sandra and the family on the death of the indefatigable Dennis. Diana particularly remembers him as her Associate President of the Vic Music Club in 1954 - well organized, enthusiastic, and always supportive - keen about the music of Gilbert &Sullivan too! Roy recalls chatting with him at numerous Vic Alumni events and marveling at the number of volunteer activities with administrative responsibilities that Dennis could manage at the same time, all the while laughing and clearly enjoying his demanding life style. We know that his extraordinary contributions to society will live on and we hope that you, Sandra, your three sons and five grandchildren will retain countless happy memories of his time with you.

Dear family of Hon. Dennis Lane,
I read of Dennis' passing with sadness and fond memories. I first met Dennis in the 1980's when he was still at Oslers. We were eventually opposing counsel on a long trial before the late Justice Richard Holland that dealt with something called "Zapmap". I recall that Justice Holland was writing his judgment as Dennis and I were making closing submissions. When were we were finished, the judge started reading his judgment. It was Dennis' last case before he was appointed to the Court.
I appeared Dennis before him several times over the years in Court,. Including on an emergency Saturday motion for a mandatory order to reopen a church that had been shut down for defaulting on its rent just before its annual fundraiser. Dennis made the order but later told me that it was the only time he ever had to sit as the emergency judge on a Saturday. After he left the Bench, I sought his wisdom on the merits of appeals. He was also the arbitrator on a hotly-contested shareholder dispute in 2010-2011. My clients were astounded when Arbitrator Lane referred to the opposing party as a "liar and thief" in his Final Award!! Dennis was unfailingly gentlemanly, good-natured and polite but he was not afraid to tell it like it was. I had a lot of admiration and respect for Dennis. I will remember him. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and family. Igor Ellyn, QC
