Dear Peter, Amy, Sara and Kate - How I wish I could give each of you a hug. I'm awfully late in sending a greeting to you - but please - my tardiness is not an indication of anything more than a normally slow pace. It had to come, this business of dying comes to us all - and never are we ''prepared''. Losing a parent holds a special poignancy.
Being the oldest of the Jewett sisters, I remember the handsome and red haired Reed Scowen in his younger days. In the mid sixties, I'd say, and he, a faithful skier at Owl's Head. A ready smile, eyes that met the other's, who always had a moment for a personal exchange. How've you been keeping? How's business? A grocer appreciates the gesture, especially when the questioner listens to and for an answer. Reed did.
Please know that Carol and I were happy to have know the Scowan's - and their patriarch! We will miss him too. His article about sleepy little Vale Perkins still hangs in the store...Sincerely, Sandra and Carolyn Jewett

I am writing to extend the sincerest sympathies from the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre in Potton, Quebec in light of Mr. Scowen's passing. I will long remember your Dad's visit (along with Peter) to our Youth Centre in Mansonville and his spending time with our youth. When we hear Neil Young's Harvest Moon it will always bring your Dad's story to our hearts.
Yours is a beautiful, loving and generous family surely inspired by this beautiful father, partner, grandfather and friend. I know he was very proud of his family and grateful for the love that surrounded him.
A beautiful person. Sending you all our love and comfort as you celebrate this gift shared with so many.

Dear Scowen family: Amy, Peter, Kate, Sarah, Mary Anne and Cynthia,
Our sincere condolences with Reed's passing. It is a sad time for the family and Reed's many friends. He was a kind, generous and exceptional man who had a great interest in the world and the people around him. We all will miss him, but hope that many happy memories will come back.
I met Reed in the early nineties at Tyndale St Georges, an inner city community center in Montreal. Reed, who had retired from his political career at the time, was looking for some volunteer work to do in a different environment. I worked with him on the Board of Directors and on the Nominating Committee for many years. I learned good Governance, financial management, and strategic planning from him.
Tyndale was a modest church-run operation then. Reed set out with great energy, commitment and hard work to bring Tyndale to a twenty-first century, not-for-profit successful organization. He set up a Foundation with its own Board of Directors to make sure that there always would be enough funds for a rainy day. He initiated fundraising activities and brought in many new volunteers. He knocked on the doors of many former colleagues and corporate companies and asked for contributions. He always said: "I'm asking for your financial support for Tyndale, I'm not asking this for myself". It worked!
After he stepped down from Tyndale, Frits and I stayed in touch with him through lunches, occasional dinners and telephone calls. Later, when he moved to Toronto to be closer to his children we continued with phone calls. He was an example of strength, courage and resilience to me in the battle we both fought against Parkinson's disease. He never complained, always had something positive or interesting to say until the very end. He truly was a remarkable man, of great intelligence and great depth.
Wishing you all strength and courage in this difficult time.
May Reed rest in peace and be remembered forever.

Dear Peter and the Scowen family,
My deepest condolences for the loss of your father Peter. And as you mentioned in one of your media interviews a close personal friend. An additional blessing given that we don't determine who our relatives will be, but we do choose our friends.
He was a class act and made a real contribution to the English-speaking community, Quebec and Canada. He was nice enough to invite me to visit him in 1999 before I first moved to Japan. I really appreciate what he had to say and found it a learning experience.

I am very sorry for your loss.
I worked with Mr. Scowen when he was delegate general of Québec in New York for about 3 years. He was a gentleman, a diplomat. He had trust in us. He was one of the best bosses I had in my 35 years in the work place.
He believed in the importance of culture in our society and in the impact that it could have in communicating with people, in networking in a city like New York. He opened the delegate's residence to greet artists like Robert Lepage, Marie Chouinard and many others. In the picture posted below, you see Joe Melillo of the Brookly Academy of Music, the Canadian consul, Robert Lepage, Mr Scowen and me. It was at the opening of one of Robert Lepage's pieces at BAM. These are great memories. Thank you Mr. Scowen.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

To my dearest cousins Amy, Peter, Sarah, and Kate I send you my deepest condolences on the loss of your amazing father, and am sending you my love, and am thinking about you and your families.
I have so many fond memories of all the wonderful times I spent with my Uncle Reed, that will live forever, whether it was at that cool house in Westmount, the beautiful country house in Mansonville, or at the cottages or main house in North Hatley, sailing or water skiing on Lake Massawippi, our family olympics days on the main, skiing at Owl's Head, etc.
Uncle Reed was always so intently interested in what was going on in your life and how you were doing. He always listened so well, and then of course would often give you some advice which you always be smart to listen to.
I sure hope that we can all get together soon in North Hatley to celebrate his incredible life. I am certain we are all looking forward to that day coming real soon.
Much love to you all,

I am very sorry for your loss. I owe Mr. Scowen a debt of gratitude.
I worked for that paper convertor in Laval for 20 years. I joined Perkins in 1975 working in the cost department. My boss was a French accountant with whom I have kept in close contact with. I last saw him at his Chateau in the Beaujolais area of France last June. Due to the European connection, Bowater, there was a chap who worked in the cost department for a few months as part of his schooling, and again we have remained close friends since, I visiting him in the UK last June. At Perkins, I graduated to the Marketing department.
I remember vividly listening to a call on talk show where Mr. Scowen was the guest. This one person called in, quite irate, asked your Dad where he got his 'cred'. He answered 'I peddled toilet paper'.
After a year with Cascades, I moved to Ontario to work for a convertor in Toronto. There I worked, 'peddling toilet paper' as well as other complimentary products. Stayed for 16 years with them finally retiring from Kruger, 2 years, as they purchased the Company. A wonderful run.
Again I truly owe Mr. Scowen a very large debt of gratitude.
And again I am very sorry for your loss

I'm sorry for your loss. I attended a few events with the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce in London when Mr. Scowan was based there. Even though I had little to contribute at the time, Mr. Scowan was friendly and gracious and made me feel an important part of the Canada-UK community. He made a distinct impression on me which lasts to this day. I think that reflects the power of his personality and he used it kindly. Please accept my sincere condolences. Ann Richards

“Had I known you were under 18, I wouldn’t have hired you.”
I remember the words well. Mr. Scowen had recruited me as his secretary a few weeks before the byelection in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce that secured his seat as an MNA in 1978. Thank goodness I hadn’t let on sooner that I was 17!
My workspace was in a small room equipped with an electric typewriter in the Scowen family home, just a block away from my own. I remember meeting most (all?) of his children and picking lettuce from the backyard. Ever the gentleman, Mr. Scowen was a joy to work with: calm, warm and caring. Throughout my collegiate and university studies, I continued to work for him on a part-time basis at his N.D.G. office.
The last time we spoke on the phone, I was a young mother, and he was serving as Quebec’s delegate general to New York.
It saddens me that his family, who meant so much to him, was unable to be by his side at this crucial time. Life can be cruel even to the best of people.
What a privilege to have known him! Let’s cherish the memories.

You are all part of such a warm and loving family created by Aunt Eulah and Uncle Phil and I feel so lucky that I was fortunate to have been a small part ‘on the edge’ as Gordon Edgar’s wife and so a cousin by marriage to all of you. A highlight of our summer was spending some time with the Scowen Family in North Hatley, Quebec. You all have wonderful memories to share with one another. Losing such a dear person during this pandemic is especially hard as last visits were impossible. Dear Amy, Peter, Sarah, Kate and families.
Our condolences to all of you on the passing of your father and grandfather.
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to spend time with your father in the last years since his arrival in Toronto. We visited together several times and on occasion with my mother. His hospitality and charm were ever present. He always showed genuine interest in our lives and stories.
Thinking in the moment of your father, I will remember his courage most, battling Parkinson and trying to live the fullest life he could. He always seemed to have projects on the go and rejoiced in the life’s you and your children were leading.
It has not been easy for your father or for any of you in the last many years. Your devotion to him and his care gave him a beautiful and full life as he battled his disease. I hope this brings you some comfort as you reflect on your dad and his life. You’ve done him very proud.
God bless your father and all of you at this time. May Uncle Reed Rest in Peace.
Released from the shackles of his disease I imagine him to be overjoyed in the reunion with his Mom and Dad. They have lots to catch up on.
We look forward to celebrating his life with all of you in North Hatley whenever that day comes.
Thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love Brent Scowen, Janice and family.

I met your Dad at Hazelton Place where he was a good friend to my father, Lloyd. He was such a lovely man and I remember thinking how lucky my father was to make a new friend so late in his life. Although they both had Parkinson's Disease, I think that their true bond was their interest in the world. My father was very impressed by your father's literary accomplishments and they enjoyed talking about politics and the current events of the day. We all went to Morton's for a steak one night and I had the pleasure of sitting by your father. I loved every minute of it and am so grateful that my father had such a good friend. I am so sorry that he died during the pandemic. My sympathies go out to all of you.

Dear friends and family of Reed Scowen,
Please accept my sympathies upon Reed’s passing. As Executive Director of Alliance Quebec during his brief time as Chairman, I learned so much — not without some heartburn and angst — from his imaginative, lucid and, yes, stubborn leadership. Like him, I have served as an MNA and Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier. His example has often guided me. His profound life-long conviction that the aspirations of English- and French-speaking Quebecers can and must be compatible is one that should continue to inspire all of us. I’m glad to have known him. I hope you will all be comforted by fond memories of his long life.
