I was sorry to learn of Doug's passing. I had known of him when he was OMA President but only met him when he did some locum placements with us in Peterborough. I recall noting some aspect of how he handed off his patients to the Recovery nurses and thinking that he did a better job of that than I did and that I should adopt more of his style. He was likely never aware of how his mentorship influenced my practice for the better. I was involved with the OMA for many years but Doug only latterly reappeared at Council meetings where I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him. I recall him fondly as I'm sure do you all.
My condolences,
Renwick Mann MD FRCPC Anesthesiology

Dear Carolyn,
I was saddened to learn of your dad's passing; it is good that you have so many wonderful and happy memories of him. He obviously loved gatherings - my most vivid memory will be of the hot dog parties which he so much enjoyed and which had become a highlight of the sailing year. We will miss him on the island.
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

What a beautiful obituary to a man who touched so many lives.
Penny , Carolyn, Charles and all of the Caldwell family our thoughts are with at a time that is so very sad and when the world needs more men like Doug. My dad and Sheena were cousins and I met Doug in 1988 when he and Sheena came here to New Zealand for a Rose Convention.Treasure all of those amazing family memories.

To Penny, Carolyn, Charles and your families,
You have written a wonderful tribute to your father. It brings back many memories for me from 50 + years ago, sailing.with Doug on the family C&C 27, Nanabozho. Your father lived every day as if it was the most important day of his life.
Doug was the first person to offer me an opportunity to race on a keel boat - a big deal for a gawky twelve year old who did not otherwise have a family with a larger boat to sail on. He was a mentor to me at that time - a habit he seemed to fall into for any lucky soul who came into his sphere of influence.
Doug and Sheena raised an amazing family whom I was lucky enough to know well at the time. I often think back to those days as I now have three grown boys of my own, with their own families.
Very sad to hear of the passing of your father, Doug. Please accept our deepest condolences.

What a wonderful man and someone we admired every summer for the love he had of his Nonsuch boat Nanabozo. Our boat "About Time," was always a few boats down from his at RCYC south island He was a steadfast excellent sailor who was always willing to lend a hand! We will miss him . Our most sincere condolences to Dr Caldwells family and friends.

Sincere condolences to our cousins Penny, Carolyn, Charles and their families. As Uncle Doug’s nieces, we have fond memories of family get togethers for holidays and special events such as Uncle Doug’s 90th birthday party. Our Dad was Doug’s older brother, and the brothers spent many happy hours together sailing, operating ham radios and later honing their computer skills.
Uncle Doug will be missed by all who knew him, including his nieces and their families.
Fondly,
Dianne and Debbie Caldwell

Dear Penny and your loved ones,
What a lovely tribute to an amazing man. While I never met your father, his spirit, humour, and joie de vive came through so clearly in those words. He sounds like a real character and a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. I'm sure it leaves a big hole in your heart, and hopefully the next generations will find a way to keep on with the traditions he started.
Fondly,
Sharon Donaldson, Toronto

So sorry for your loss. Doug and I shared seven years on the Ontario Medical Association Board of Directors and became lifelong friends. He was an outgoing guy who was always involved in so many things which helped him keep busy after Sheena's death. I sailed with him on a few trips and we always had long discussions on how the health care system should be changed. He lived a long and productive life and will be greatly missed.
